Lots of solar activity in recent hours. Huge CME from the 1719 flare (not too far from Earth-Sun magnetic footpoint).

[link to iswa.ccmc.gsfc.nasa.gov]

Several recent filament liftoffs; the largest one in the southeast, another in the SW, another on the far SW limb, and several smaller ones I noticed on the SDO bronze filter movie.

:4/18-swprom:

We'll have to watch for more CMEs from these eruptions.

exactly what I thought...it flatlined...wonder what could be causing it?
 Quoting: MissionInvisible

Hello MIhf

It has been mentioned, and I hate to sound like a stuck record but it is the issue of our time, the Solar Dipole is really weak, really, really weak, this is in turn causing a lack of Sunspot formation with decent magnetic Complexity as well as a stronger field within the Sunspots that would allow for a normal output of Flaring during a Solar Max.

As it is we are entering a period of Minima. akin the Dalton Minimum but from the looks of projections will out do the Dalton and possibly extend to be closer to a Maunder with around 60-100 Years of lowered output, stalled Cycles and all that accompanies such a period.
[link to www.vukcevic.talktalk.net]

[link to www.schulphysik.de]

[link to ktwop.wordpress.com]

Predicted in at least 2003 by MA Vukcevic(this period of very low output associated with a much weakened Solar Dipole) [link to www.vukcevic.talktalk.net]

Other by-products of Low output is a shrinking Heliosphere that is causing Charge difference throughout our Solar System(hence the observed changes on the Planets and perturbations of Asteroids etc.) [link to news.nationalgeographic.com]

[link to news.nationalgeographic.co.uk]

I would go into it more but have too much here and I think some folks are bored with my reiterating this points(as important as they are)so I'd just say,if anyone wants to take a lo0k at this collating of data just go back through my posts of the last 3 Months odd on this Thrrrraaaadddd.

: )

Oh,and be sure to use the above linkswink

Hello Cesium sun

About your past 3 months or so of data collating, may I suggest you start a thread on it? I'm sure many would appreciate it!

It would of course require a bit of precious time, but once you catch up to it and keep rolling, you could either simply C/P from that thread to this one, or link here to your thread. Though I suggest posting at BOTH treads, by C/P.

It definitely WOULD be a great tool!

How many hands raised?

Both mine already!
lôôk, both hands: \o/

Hmmm?

I think that considering this is the Cycle 24 Thread and I have been in here posting for ages now, that this is the correct place for the data,as in here we all watch the same thing just from different angles, some notice what others don't and that is the dynamics of this thread that(Im0)makes it what it is,a brilliant repository of data, from many angles.

This just happens to be the one I am dedicated to for now as I see no other conclusion to be drawn - unless there exists a mechanism un-spotted by all that will jump start the Dipole and hence,ze Sun back into action.

1719 has one of those extreme features [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] the extremely hot source above it in the lower Corona,I'd expect a lot more from her yet!

Also, the Stonyhurst [link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov] Heliographic looks like it is getting pretty fresh folks!

That escalated very quickly indeed!

1719s' CME has taken the South-Western Prominence with it(as Hugh shows in the Smilie)

What do you guys think..65% chance of being Geo-effective?

It should be more West but I don't know yet how much Corona it has taken with it,COR2 Ahead does show a fair bit,but I'd need to see the SDO movie file to be positive, anyone seen any yet?

I'll check now.

woohoo

Edito:My SDO movies won't work?

Anyhoo',H alpha shows a fair disturbance along with the Southern Prominence leaving as well as some incredible 'Plasma Rain' piling back into 1719 just beyond the Mid-Western limb [link to halpha.nso.edu] .

I am now more 60%.

The numbered active regions in the southern hemisphere all seem to be decaying and weakening now. The latest HMI Intensitygram shows 3 or 4 new regions popping up across the northern hemisphere.

Latest HMI Intensitygram:

[link to jsoc.stanford.edu]

NOAA Solar activity summary:

.24 hr Summary...
Solar activity reached low levels with a long duration C6 flare from
Region 1719 (N09, L=074) off the northeast limb at 18/1823 UTC.
Associated with the event was a Type II radio sweep (1273 km/s) and a
CME off the west limb first observed in LASCO C2 imagery at 18/1836 UTC.
The CME is not expected to be geoeffective. Slight decay was observed
in Regions 1722 (S21W67) and 1723 (S18W26). The rest of the numbered
regions were relatively stable. Several filament eruptions were
observed during the period. The first filament eruption occurred in the
southeast quadrant centered near S13E50 beginning at 18/2052 UTC. Two
subsequent filament eruptions occurred in the southwest quadrant
centered near S22W26 at 18/1728 UTC and S15W25 at 19/0039 UTC,
respectively. A prominence eruption was observed off the southwest limb
beginning at 18/2052 UTC.
No Earth-directed CMEs were observed during
the period.

Scientists will soon gain a better view into energy and plasma movement near the surface of the sun, thanks to delivery of the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) spacecraft to Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif. in preparation for launch.
Part of NASA's Small Explorer (SMEX) Mission, which delivers space exploration missions costing less than $120 million, IRIS was designed and built at Lockheed Martin's Space Systems Company Advanced Technology Center (ATC) in Palo Alto, Calif. The program was developed with support from Lockheed Martin's Civil Space line of business as well as partners Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Montana State University, Stanford University and the University of Oslo. The launch of IRIS will not take place before May 28.

Would of been weaker than the last CME had it even hit.

The numbered active regions in the southern hemisphere all seem to be decaying and weakening now. The latest HMI Intensitygram shows 3 or 4 new regions popping up across the northern hemisphere.

Latest HMI Intensitygram:

No Earth-directed CMEs were observed during
the period.

It looks like we wait and see what comes next

Howdy, -sonichi, it shouldn't be quiet for too long. The new region near mid-disk north appears to be fraternal twin betas; spots are small but magnetics are developing.

New Active Regions magnetogram-

Also, there may be a large active region about to come over the SE limb. However the last two times this has turned out to be plages only, so we'll have to wait and see.

Hello Hugh,

I am pretty sure that South-Eastern Region is currently a Sunspot(from the looks of all the arcading Plasmas)but on the farside, like you said it could well just become a Plage once it rounds the limb,we'll see if it blows itself out before then - if it pops off a large Flare it may well end up as just a Plage region, but at present it looks quite ferocious on your images ^^.

Both farsides on the EUVI imagers look pretty active at present,Behind [link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov] and Ahead(looks very tasty) [link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov]

If they last we could see some Earthside action in the near future.

The Coronal Holes our side look deep and large [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] !

Good stuff.
