It was awesome and won't be seen again until Oct. 2015. If you have clear skies and a vantage of the western horizon after sunset, by all means check it out. Hugh M Eye User ID: 39479530 United States 05/25/2013 10:38 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This has been one weird-ass geomagnetic storm. Can you imagine if that CME hit us face-on? I'm wondering if the full moon's position inside the magnetotail has some amplifying effect. I recall the big March 2012 storm was also during a full moon. Some physicist out there oughtta look into this.....maybe win a Nobel Prize, haha. Here's NOAA's latest diatribe/update on event- Solar Wind .24 hr Summary... Solar wind averaged around 500 km/s while total field ranged from 2 nT to 8 nT until 25/0910 UTC when an increase in total field followed by an increase in solar wind speed occurred. Total field then ranged from 6 nT to 13 nT with solar wind speeds increasing to approximately 640 km/s. The Bz component of the interplanetary magnetic field ranged from maximum values of +9 nT and -11 nT. At approximately 25/2054 UTC, another increase in solar wind speed occurred to approximately 730 km/s with a maximum of 842 km/s at 25/2105 UTC. Phi angle was variable until 25/1314 UTC, when it moved into a mostly negative (towards) sector. Solar wind parameters were indicative of a possible combination of CME and CH HSS effects. .Forecast... Solar wind speed is expected to continue to be enhanced for the forecast period (26-28 May) due to a combination of waning CME and CH HSS effects. Geospace .24 hr Summary... The geomagnetic field was at unsettled to minor storm (G1-Minor) levels with major storm periods observed at high latitudes. Minor storm periods were observed during the 25/0300-0600 UTC and 25/1500-1800 UTC intervals due to continued CME activity. .Forecast... The geomagnetic field is expected to be at quiet to minor storm (G1-Minor) conditions on day 1 (26 May) due to continued CME activity that began with the arrival of the 22 May CME and possible CH HSS effects. Quiet to unsettled conditions are expected on days 2-3 (27-28 May) due to CH HSS activity. [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov] I may be wrong but it sounds like NOAA is bewildered by this one, too. We have so much to learn (and unlearn and re-learn) and discover in this field of Earth-Plasma-Sun dynamics.
