Oh look at that. Maybe that spot will turn this thread from being so quiet lately. :(

AR1785 was a huge disappointment. It seemed to have all the ingredients for a spectacular flare-filled week- large, expansive spot group, mixed Delta polarities, etc. Well, as you know, like a lot of rookie phenoms, he pooped=out before the All-Star break (pardon my mixed metaphors). So we patiently watch and wait....that AR which produced the 3 X's in 24 hrs.didn't look like much at all to me....I guess size isn't everything after all. I think all of the longtime followers of this thread know that we're constantly surprised and amazed at unexpected solar events and often crushed with boredom and anxiety when the expected never materializes. Perhaps we're looking at a mirror of human existence and the spiritual potentialities imagined, yet never seized upon. Always remember that one instant can change history, reality, and YOUR life....but maybe it's a chaotic jumble of micro-instants that few folks notice .....

One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If weve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. Were no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. Its simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that weve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back. Carl Sagan

Nub question!
is there any other theories about why sun spots actually black?
Core of the sun 27 million degrees F (15 million degrees C).
Upper layer of the sun's interior drops below 3.5 million degrees F (2 million degrees C).
The temperature in the photosphere is about 10,000 degrees F (5,500 degrees C).
At the center of big sunspots the temperature can be as low as 7,300 degrees F (4,000 degrees C).

Considering background temperature of core at 27 mil and 3.5 mil at upper level does 2.700 degrees F can make a difference so it is visible to us ?
