a "professor" was someone posting about comet ison on a thread earlier saying it may cause massive solar flares on the sun and end up taking out the power grid...

what do you lot think about that ???????

NASA Photos Show Outburst from Potential 'Comet of the Century'
A comet that could put on a dazzling show when it zooms through the inner solar system later this year is already blasting out huge amounts of gas and dust, new observations by a NASA spacecraft show.
Images taken on June 13 by NASA's infrared Spitzer Space Telescope reveal that dust and carbon dioxide gas are streaming off Comet ISON, forming a tail about 186,400 miles (300,000 kilometers) long, researchers said.

Gas, dust observed streaming from 'soda-pop' comet approaching Earth
NASA says a space telescope spotted what are likely strong carbon dioxide emissions from a comet that will pass through the inner solar system this year.
Images captured by the Spitzer space telescope suggest carbon dioxide is slowly and steadily "fizzing" away from the so-called "soda-pop comet," known as ISON, along with dust in a tail about 186,400 miles long, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., reported Tuesday.

there are numerous countries right now figuring out the amount to bill...all the need is the address for ISON's billing department.

Forecast Discussion
Issued: 2013 Jul 26 0030 UTC
Prepared by the U.S. Dept. of Commerce, NOAA, Space Weather Prediction Center

Solar Activity
.24 hr Summary...
Solar activity was low. Region 1800 (S09W32, Dao/beta-gamma) was the
most active sunspot group on the disk as it produced occasional optical
subflares, one of which was associated with a C1 x-ray flare. It also
produced the largest flare of the period, a C2/Sf flare at 25/2244 UTC.
This region showed minor intermediate spot growth and retained a beta-gamma magnetic structure, though it appeared to weaken as the day progressed. New Region 1805 (S07W01, Cso/beta) showed gradual intermediate spot growth, but was quiet in terms of flare production.
There were no Earth-directed coronal mass ejection observed during the period.

.Forecast...
Solar activity is expected to be very low through the period (Jul 26 - 28) with a chance for a C-class flare and a slight chance for an M-class flare (R1 - Minor).

Energetic Particle
.24 hr Summary...
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at moderate to high levels (peak 2586 pfu). The greater than 10 MeV proton flux at geosynchronous orbit was at background levels.

.Forecast...
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at moderate to high levels on Jul 26 increasing to high levels during Jul 27 - 28 in response to a coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS). The greater than 10 MeV proton flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at background levels through the period (Jul 26 - 28).

Solar Wind
.24 hr Summary...
ACE data indicated the earlier-than-expected onset of a recurrent positive-polarity CH HSS. IMF Phi data indicated a mostly Toward (negative-polarity) solar-sector orientation through approximately 25/1400 UTC. A Toward to Away (positive-polarity) solar-sector boundary crossing (SSBC) occurred at approximately 25/1400 UTC. Following the
SSBC, solar wind speed and IMF Bt began to gradually increase (peaks to 521 km/s at 25/2243 UTC and 15 nT at 25/1946 UTC, respectively), signaling the onset of a recurrent CH HSS.

.Forecast...
Solar wind speed is expected to increase during the first half of Jul 26 as the CH HSS intensifies, with peaks to around 550 km/s, based on the latest Enlil ambient-mode model run prediction. Wind speed is expected to gradually decrease during Jul 27 - 28 as the CH HSS subsides.

NASA's IRIS Telescope Offers First Glimpse of Sun's Mysterious Atmosphere
These two images show a section of the sun as seen by NASA's Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph, or IRIS, on the right and NASA's SDO on the left. The IRIS image provides scientists with unprecedented detail of the lowest parts of the sun's atmosphere, known as the interface region. Image Credit: NASA/SDO/IRIS. For a larger version of this image please go here.
The moment when a telescope first opens its doors represents the culmination of years of work and planning -- while simultaneously laying the groundwork for a wealth of research and answers yet to come. It is a moment of excitement and perhaps even a little uncertainty. On July 17, 2013, the international team of scientists and engineers who supported and built NASA's Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph, or IRIS, all lived through that moment.

New polar field strength measurements of the Sun released today. [link to wso.stanford.edu]

Progress towards reversal continues to be made in the Sun's south polar region. Portions of the south polar region have now swung into the opposite polarity ever yet more convincingly. {currently surveyed region clocking in at negative (-) 21 microtesla}

Neither pole has completely reversed yet, but signs of progress are being shown every update!

As of July 16 the guesstimate continues to be calling for sunspot max around the start of 2014 [link to www.sidc.oma.be]

SDO VS IRIS
[link to www.nasa.gov]
WOW!
"The quality of images and spectra we are receiving from IRIS is amazing. This is just what we were hoping for," said Alan Title, IRIS principal investigator at the Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Center Solar and Astrophysics Laboratory in Palo Alto, Calif. "There is much work ahead to understand what we're seeing, but the quality of the data will enable us to do that."

Not only does IRIS provide state-of-the-art observations to look at the interface region, it makes uses of advanced computing to help interpret what it sees. Indeed, interpreting the light flowing out of the interface region could not be done well prior to the advent of today's supercomputers because, in this area of the sun, the transfer and conversion of energy from one form to another is not understood.

A 60-day check out period began at launch. The first 30 days, which ends July 27, consists of tests and spacecraft system checks. The team will use the remaining 30 days for initial observing runs to fine tune instrument observations. If all is nominal, the team plans to begin normal science mode by August 26.

All data will be available to scientists and the public as soon as the mission begins science operations.
