This video from the 10th makes a good point about the 'Official SS Number' and also predicts that filament liftoff within a week and its geoeffectiveness. As I've stated before, I think the 10cm radio flux is the most accurate and objective measurement of overall solar activity, but traditions die hard in science, LOL. The different measuring rods can be found here in one graph:

GLOBAL COLDING IN PROGRESS-

Analysis of NOAA's Annual Climate Report reveals 'spin', incompetence, mis-interpretation of data, contradictions, and Carbon Tunnel-vision Syndrome. (I made that last one up, LOL).

"“To no one’s surprise, the report gives the reader the impression that warming is galloping ahead out of control,” writes Gosselin. “But their data shows just the opposite.”

Although the NOAA report noted that in 2012, “the Arctic continues to warm” with “sea ice reaching record lows,” it also stated that the Antarctica sea ice “reached a record high of 7.51 million square miles” on Sept. 26, 2012.

And the latest figures for this year show that there’s been a slowdown of melting in the Arctic this summer as well, with temperatures at the North Pole well below normal for this time of year. Meteorologist Joe Bastardi calls it “the coldest ever recorded.”(snip)

On August 7th, the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten quoted Irish solar expert Ian Elliott predicting that lower levels of sunspot activity over the next few years “indicates that we may be on the path to a new little ice age.”

If you think scientists just couldn’t get any more incompetent, then think again. NOAA scientists even appear to believe that cold events are now signs of warming,” Gosselin points out.

[link to www.cnsnews.com]

It's comforting to know that NOAA's incompetence isn't confined to their Space Weather Prediction Center. Gotta go now and stock up on firewood before the price goes up, LOL.

NOTE TO NOAA, NASA, and LOCKHEED- hey, I'm under-employed, so when the shill-checks start coming in you'll find I can be a lot more understanding (by the way I also accept bit-coin and silver bullion). Jes' kidding, folks...yuk-yuk-yuk.

Hey Geo whats a CH look like through your scope, does it show the open stream or does it have a solid appearance. I have a friend that has a solar filter on his, not anywhere as nice as your scope, but the CH appear solid yet you can easily see the SS?

Hello, Sonic, a coronal hole is by definition just a hole in the corona (sol's upper atmosphere). I believe the hydrogen-alpha scopes just image the photosphere, so no holes can be seen (hopefully). I've become a great proponent of the h-alpha scopes for their excellent views of filaments (better than SDO!) and the GONG network specifically for their 1-minute updates which clearly show flares (away from the limb anyway). Special imaging, like the Extreme Ultraviolet Imager or the AIA instrument aboard SDO are best to view CH's. Peace, Sol-Brother.

The 'pros' over at NOAA and Lockheed must be on August holiday.

Lockheed hasn't corrected their obvious gaffe of 1808 in their flare list and NOAA seems to have missed the huge filament liftoff entirely and their G1 storm watch has fizzled again. I think they're phoning it in from some sandy beach while soaking up that last bit of Global Warming, hahaha. Maybe our spaceweather services should be outsourced to a Chinese forced-labor camp where a bad prediction will cost you a kidney.....LOLLOLLOL.

HUGE FILAMENT LIFTOFF-
:8/14-erupt:

NOAA-Solar Activity

.24 hr Summary...
Solar activity was at low levels. The largest event of the period, a C4
flare, came from old Region 1809 (now two days around the west limb).

Region 1818 (S07E07) a Dhc/beta, produced a couple of low-level
C-flares, but showed signs magnetic simplification and decay. Region
1817 (S22W19) an Esc/beta, maintained a horizontal shear line, but also
showed signs of simplification. New Region 1821 (N01W22) was numbered
today as it developed, but was simple and largely inactive. No
Earth-directed coronal mass ejections were observed during the period.

HOUSTON, WE HAVE A PROBLEM-

Incredible slideshow of the Chinese space program which is on track to eclipse NASA/ESA and the Russians within 20 years.

"China had become the third country in history to send a manned vessel into space. Since then, China has sent a total of five manned missions into orbit, including June's 15-day Shenzhou X mission, the country's longest to date. During the mission, three astronauts conducted automatic and manually controlled dockings with an orbiting module. These are crucial steps in establishing a permanent space station, which China hopes will replace its current small orbiting module by 2020. (snip)

Hickman writes for Foreign Policy, there "are unmistakable warning signs that China may surpass the United States and Russia to become the world's preeminent spacefaring power."

Don't 'duh' me, friend. You had me frantically DuckDuckGo-ing for info on 'quantum chromodynamics' the other day, hehe. I thought for sure you were making shit up, but I learned something new. Thank you, shadasonic.

We're all learning from each other here and soon our 'hive mind' will surpass NOAA and NASA; hopefully we'll catch up with China and India too. I'm only 2 1/2 years into this solar stuff and I admittedly have huge gaps in my knowledge of physics (especially all the X's & 0's involved in Einsteinian equations). But, like most everyone here, I have an insatiable curiosity and a rebellious streak of independent thinking.

I spent the morning today researching SOLAR SECTOR BOUNDARY CROSSINGS in expectation of NOAA's predicted disturbance. The disturbance never happened, so I never posted my findings; but shit, I did learn a whole lot I didn't know yesterday. Here's a few links of papers and such for anyone interested:

MORE MILITARY- INDUSTRIAL INSANITY-wtf

Forgotten Cold War Plan To Put A Ring Around Planet Earth-

During the summer of 1963, Earth looked a tiny bit like Saturn.

The same year that Martin Luther King, Jr. marched on Washington and Beatlemania was born, the United States launched half a billion whisker-thin copper wires into orbit in an attempt to install a ring around the Earth. It was called Project West Ford, and it’s a perfect, if odd, example of the Cold War paranoia and military mentality at work in America’s early space program.

A potential solution was born in 1958 at MIT’s Lincoln Labs, a research station on Hanscom Air Force Base northwest of Boston. Project Needles, as it was originally known, was Walter E. Morrow’s idea. He suggested that if Earth possessed a permanent radio reflector in the form of an orbiting ring of copper threads, America’s long-range communications would be immune from solar disturbances and out of reach of nefarious Soviet plots.

The ultimate fate of the West Ford needles is also surrounded by a cloud of uncertainty. Because the copper wires were so light, project leaders assumed that they would re-enter the atmosphere within several years, pushed Earthward by solar wind. Most of the needles from the failed 1961 and successful 1963 launch likely met this fate. Many now lie beneath snow at the poles.

But not all the needles returned to Earth. Thanks to a design flaw, it’s possible that several hundred, perhaps thousands of clusters of clumped needles still reside in orbit around Earth, along with the spacecraft that carried them.

Yeah, another good one is the 'Discoverer program' a/k/a Corona Project. It was military spy mission hidden under a fake NASA research project. Shocking to me, but these secrets are quietly leaked out drip by drip eventually. Not only the public, but the scientists involved were completely hoodwinked....can't make this shit up, LOL.

"The Corona project management structure became the National Reconnaissance Office(NRO). NRO is a supersecret agency whose exist was not even acknowledged until recently. On December 23, 1958, the government created an project, called Discoverer, with an acknowledged goal of scientific research: testing of returning vehicles to Earth for the recovery of occupants, instruments, films and other scientific payloads; development of an early warning system for the detection of enemy missiles; development of a stable platform for scientific observations. The entire Discoverer Project was a ruse. No scientific objectives were planned. Discoverer actually had a staff working on scientific instruments, including launching pods for space mice, but none were ever launched or intended to be launched. Discoverer Project staff did not know about Corona. The cover was so elaborate that scientific instruments placed on Discoverer satellites were removed before launch.

[link to spacecovers.com]

From NASA's official website-

The Discoverer program was a classified operation managed by the Advanced Research Projects Agency of the Department of Defense and the U.S. Air Force. The primary goal of the program was to develop a film-return photographic surveillance satellite to assess how rapidly the Soviet Union was producing long-range bombers and ballistic missiles and where they were being deployed, and to take photos over the Sino-Soviet bloc to replace the the U2 spyplanes. It was part of the secret Corona program which was also used to produce maps and charts for the Department of Defense and other US government mapping programs. The goal of the program was not revealed to the public at the time, it was presented as a program to orbit large satellites to test satellite subsystems and investigate the communication and environmental aspects of placing humans in space, including carrying biological packages for return to Earth from orbit. In all, 38 Discoverer satellites were launched by February 1962, although the satellite reconnaissance program continued until 1972 as the Corona project. The program documents were declassified in 1995.

Yet another reason to question EVERYTHING the government says. Crazy, eh?

You gotta check this out:

I wouldn't want you to violate a trust or spill any beans (tho feel free to IM me with any clues, hehe).

The more I think about this, the more astounded I am. The first successful United States satellite launch was in Jan. '58-Explorer 1:
[link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)]

This was a panicked response to the Russian Sputnik. That NASA article states that between Dec. '58 to Feb. '62 there were 38 Discoverer launches. That's like ONE A MONTH! The first 3 years of our nascent space program was run by (D)ARPA, NRO, USAF and probably overseen by NSA (founded in 1952!). And to think it was all built by NAZIS and hidden by the public-friendly fake NASA front organization as a science experiment. I'm dumbfounded at how trusting and naive my parents' generation was. I guess the new tech of TELEVISION successfully clouded people's minds. Thank God for LSD, the INTERNET and the MESSIAH....may that Holy trinity expose and defeat their evil designs. Selah!

I believe that velocity is a false data reading based on spurious SOHO images. It must be much slower than that. It'd take an M5 or better to shoot a CME out at 1400-1999 km/sec. It was big but it was only a filament.

In any event, the CME doesn't seem Earth-directed (no halo) . STEREO B sows it going away from Earth. So I call a 'possible glancing blow' with many considerations. We have a large coronal hole, a CME, the 60 W. long. factor, and the aforementioned Solar Sector Boundary Crossing and how they interact, only God really knows. If the Bz is negative we could see a G2 Storm or maybe nothing at all.
It was much slower than CACTus says but it may interact with the northern CH-HSSS (coronal hole-HiSpeedStream) or maybe not....we shall see, eh?

I wasn't critiquing you, ya understand, Sol Man. Only rarely do I question the CACTus data; but it's an automated computer system. When an image (or data) is missing, it miscalculates velocity....it's 'robot-stupid' in other words.

I've been observing a lot of raw nature where I am in the hills of Tennessee (named after the Cherokee town TENASI. And it occurred to me that no robot or drone could ever improve on the Creator's gift of LIFE. Yeah, they can build a dragonfly that sees in infared and shoots poison darts at ya; but is that really an IMPROVEMENT on the 'Natural Order'? I think it's not. The transhumanists oughtta get out of San Francisco and check out the real world. It will blow your mind!
Coming from a more or less City/Suburban matrix, a lot of natural wildlife is very new to me. I've seen many species of butterflies, birds, reptiles, a family of deer, many rabbits, lotsa dead skunks, a badass raccoon, about 30 new species of insects and arachnids which I've never encountered before. In Colorado Springs I saw a bear runnin' around Downtown. Nature is an example of resiliency, true diversity and a design which makes life strive to prosper and reproduce.

At times, I've felt telekinetic power in enticing insects and mammals to behave in a respectful way towards me. And, Praise God!, they will obey a pure heart. I'd rather work to CONVINCE NATURE- than to CONQUER IT. The sharks and jellyfish have never bothered me, thank God.
