Earth is very well protected hemmm????

It is looking like this today as a result of a magnetic substrom. We see this happen often after a bad solar storm
the CME's that hit yesterday came in so hard that they created whats known as Magnetotail Reconnection and thus caused a substorm

"A magnetic tail or magnetotail is formed by pressure from the solar wind on a planet's magnetosphere. The magnetotail can extend great distances away from its originating planet. Earth's magnetic tail extends at least 200 Earth radii in the anti-sunward direction well beyond the orbit of the Moon at about 60 Earth radii.
The extended magnetotail results from the energy stored in the planet's magnetic field. At times this energy is released and the magnetic field becomes temporarily more dipole-like. As it does so that stored energy goes to energize plasma trapped on the involved magnetic field lines. Some of that plasma is driven tailward and into the distant solar wind. The rest is injected into the inner magnetosphere where it results in the aurora and the ring current plasma population."

This is known as a Magnetic Substorm
The more common one occurs when the north-south component Bz of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) is appreciable and points southward. In this state field lines of the magnetosphere are relatively strongly linked to the IMF, allowing energy and plasma to enter it at relatively high rates. This swells up the magnetotail and makes it unstable. Ultimately the tail's structure changes abruptly and violently, a process known as a magnetic substorm.

One possible scenario (the subject is still debated) is as follows. As the magnetotail swells, it creates a wider obstacle to the solar wind flow, causing its widening portion to be squeezed more by the solar wind. In the end, this squeezing breaks apart field lines in the plasma sheet ("magnetic reconnection"), and the distant part of the sheet, no longer attached to the Earth, is swept away as an independent magnetic structure ("plasmoid"). The near-Earth part snaps back earthwards, energizing its particles and producing Birkeland currents and bright auroras

This is why we see the magnetosphere acting eratic today, when by now, it should be calm since the CME's from yesterday have are gone
The CME's have come and gone, and what we are seeing now is the substorm that was created by the CMEs

IA. Analysis of Solar Active Regions and Activity from 05/2100Z
to 06/2100Z: Solar activity was low. The largest event of the
period was a C4/Sf flare from Region 1267 (S17E13). This region
developed a small delta in the central spot. Region 1263, an Ekc
spot class with a Beta-Gamma-Delta magnetic configuration, lost some
penumbral area in its central spots, however it developed new spots
as flux began to emerge from its trailer area. SOHO/LASCO C2
imagery observed two slow moving CMEs at 1036Z and 1736Z with the
majority of the ejecta directed off the West limb. SDO and SXI
imagery showed filament eruptions associated with the events. These
CMEs are not expected to be geoeffective.

IIB. Geophysical Activity Forecast: The geomagnetic field is
expected to be unsettled to active on 07 August as a recurrent
coronal hole high speed stream is expected to become geoeffective.
Levels are expected to decrease to quiet to unsettled on 08 August.
Mostly quiet conditions are expected on 09 August.

Significant precursor signal seen at 0230utc/2230est. Possible 6+.

Radio Direction Finder has signal coming in South East of France from somewhere out in the Mid to Southern portions of the Pacific plate to Chile to Caribbean Islands.

Hello all! Happy Sunday to you!

OK, I have a question, which is not directly solar related, I think. However, I heard about this on a solar watchers page on facebook, so I figured this may be the place to ask.

What exactly is dresden codex? I saw it mentioned, and I looked it up, but I was hoping someone could break it down for me, in laymen's terms.

The actual question someone had asked, which brought up dresden codex was, why is this solar cycle so significant, compared to others in the past. In the answer, the respondent mentioned the dresden codex.

Just curious. I can figure some of it out from looking up, but I would love to hear someone's interpretation of it. Helps me to understand somewhat better.

Hi All. Happy Sunday. There is a nice little read about the dresden codex in wikipedia.

Did something happen? I am feeling it in my face, sinus, feel like I have a persian cat nose....woke me up. Also feels like something is pushing me down, like heavy gravity, maybe.

most my friends are having the same odd symptoms today
much like they did right before the japan event
we are all on high watch
i am feeling very super anxious, shakey, like you get when you drink way way to much caffine.
i felt like this for 2 days prior to japan
take it for what its worth

sad to say i have not researched much into this subject so really do not have an opinion at this time
maybe someone else?
i will however now look into this :)

During a visit to my parents about 2 weeks ago (they live in a farming community), I asked a neighbor of theirs (works out in the fields during the day) if she had noticed a difference in the intensity of the suns rays, she said YES. The only part of her skin exposed to the sun during the day is the upper portion of her face (eyes). She said the sun burns terribly, especially this year.
