Re: SOLAR WATCH * 312 M & 25 X FLARES starting 3-7-2011 (Updated Daily)
Great shot of 1899 ... I've never seen that before either ... looks to be almost a "layered effect" Polarities layered rather than side by side ???

The idea or theory, that it takes a large SR to create or has more potential of creating a large flare, passed me by a year or so ago. We've watch so many monsters pass with incredible expectation to see ... nothing, then a flare from what would seem to be an unnumbered or insignificant area of the sun, not worth of even a class A.

The size of the SRs are relative. In fact, 1900 is HUGE by some measure (compared to Earth), what is incredible is the very complex mixing of polarities.

And that shot of 1899 may be more than just a unique photo-op. There's more to that photo, and maybe a part of the puzzle that proves out that the inner workings of the sun have more to do with what we can observe and measure by current technologies, and what we are missing as the catalyst of flares.

If there are loops connecting flares outwardly , that we can see, it stands to reason there are loops inwardly interacting that we can't, don't you think ?
 Quoting: TS66 49433581

Howdy, 66smile_kiss! You make some interesting points there. Yes, there is a lot of magnetic turmoil going on beneath the photosphere, which is what causes the spots to form. After pondering this particular sunspot's magnetogram, I've come to the conclusion that we're seeing some artifact created by the computer-colorization of the fields. The deep dark colors denote the intensity or strength of the magnetic fields. As the field weakens, the colors appear more 'washed-out'. I notice today the donut-hole is expanding on the color magnetogram, but not changing polarity.
[link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov]

Notice there is no hole on the traditional B &W magnetogram:

[link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov]

As far as the sunspot size thing goes, I agree with your observations. This is historically the reverse of what's been observed. Normally the biggest sunspots produce the biggest flares. It takes a giant-sized sunspot to fire off an X5 or stronger flare. I think this 'quiet-giant' thing is one of the big puzzles of Cycle 24, along with the delayed pole-shift.

Stay alert for 1899, though, sometimes these large regions erupt big-time when they begin to decay. And this region will be Earth-facing for another week or more.

Whoaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, really great catch AC. My thought about it looking different today is that maybe the data is being altered. This IS a conspiracy site, its essential to at least consider this.

Comet ISON: What's Next?
by Staff Writers for NASA Science News - Huntsville AL (SPX) Nov 18, 2013
Comet ISON is now inside the orbit of Earth as it plunges headlong toward the sun for a fiery close encounter on Nov. 28th. Although the comet is not yet as bright as many forecasters predicted, the comet is putting on a good show for observatories around the solar system. NASA spacecraft and amateur astronomers alike are snapping crisp pictures of the comet's gossamer green atmosphere and filamentary double-tail.
Because ISON has never passed through the inner solar system before (it is a first-time visitor from the distant Oort cloud), experts aren't sure what will happen next. Can the comet survive its Thanksgiving Day brush with the sun? Will it emerge as a bright naked-eye object?

I think I've found the answer! But I've forgotten the question, LOL.

Speaking of 'connecting the dots'...I'm learning something new today about the magnetic structure of sunspots...has anyone ever heard of UMBRAL DOTS?

Umbral Dots-

The strength of the magnetic field inside umbral dots has been a somewhat controversial subject, with some works finding no large differences between umbral dots and the umbral background (Lites et al., 1989; Tritschler and Schmidt, 1997), and other works finding a clear reduction of the field strength both in central and peripheral umbral dots (Wiehr and Degenhardt, 1993; Socas-Navarro et al., 2004; Riethmüller et al., 2008a). However, as pointed out by the the latter works this could again be -dependent, with the differences in the magnetic field being small a few hundred kilometers above , but fairly large close to this level. Here the difference can be such that the magnetic field inside the umbral dot is only a few hundred Gauss (see Figure 21). (snip)

The lower magnetic field inside umbral dots mentioned in Section 3.1.2 is a direct consequence of the convective motions described here. In the sunspot umbra, convective motions push the magnetic field lines towards the boundary of the convective cell, thereby creating a region where the vertical component of the magnetic field vector is strongly reduced. Since the ambient magnetic field is vertical, this automatically yields a very small field inside the umbral dot. At the top of the convective cell the magnetic field forms a cusp or canopy, preventing the material from continuing to flow upwards. The pile-up of material at this point creates a region of locally enhanced density, which is responsible for the appearance of the central dark lane inside umbral dots (Schüssler and Vögler, 2006). (snip)

I don't even know if this is related to what we're witnessing, but it's a fascinating read nonetheless. I've never come across this before and the solar physics here may be over my head, so anyone who enlighten us please chime in.

Here's a basic intro to magnetograms:

[link to solar-center.stanford.edu]

And a huge list of links from Stanford Solar Center, many of which are new to me:

 Quoting: Hugh M Eye

Sleuthed Hugh - I am finding this particular 'Umbral Dot' to be a massive cause of my present headache due to its lingering presence - Just spent tooo long reading but thank you for the breadcrumbs, lol.

[link to inspirehep.net]

'Umbral convection is observed as umbral dots and has been simulated by Schüssler and Vögler (2006). In such strong fields, convection manifests itself as very narrow upflow plumes of hot plasma with neighboring, narrow cool return downflows. The tendency of the magnetic field to expand as the gas pressure declines toward the surface pinches the rising plumes and accelerates the upward flow. As in normal convection, the upflows are braked rapidly near the surface where the plasma loses buoyancy due to radiative cooling. The plasma piles up, the gas pressure increases and makes the plasma expand latterly, which reduces the magnetic field strength. As a result of the enhanced density, the optical depth increases and photons can only escape from higher, cooler layers producing a dark lane through the bright umbral dot (Figure 32View Image' - [link to solarphysics.livingreviews.org]
