Wow thanks I was finally on the thread when the flare went off and watched on the noaa link. Cool. Thanks for the pics too. I love this thread.

Hey Finley....if you get a chance to go star gazing tonight watch for meteors.
I've seen a couple good ones just a few minutes ago. Bigger than your
average "shooting star"....and they are leaving long streaks across the sky.

I saw one last night...and three tonight. I think it was the 10th-13th that
the show is supposed to be the best for viewing?? But looks like tonight
there's a preview.
 Quoting: Madigan

12th and 13th
but some have been reported being seen from July 24th and all the way till Aug 26th
:)
there awesome to lay out and watch
were going to camp out in the yard for them this year
 Quoting: NiNzrez

Nice. Think I'll pick a night and drive out to the desert....which really is just
"out back"....lol....it's Vegas, whadaya expect. But you've got to get away
from the city lights ya know?

Ended up an M2.5 in the end. Are we going to have a replay of last week?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1463789

have you seen what is rotating our direction?
[link to www.lmsal.com]

most of that will be facing us within a weeks time
 Quoting: NiNzrez

Wow. That looks intense. Do you have any iformation on these sunspots coming around or do we have to wait for them to come around to be earth facing to get any info on them?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1463789

Signed in so I can edit when I make spelling goofs....that was supposed to be information...I'm sure you figured that out though.

Hey Oracle :)
was thinking about you the other day
hope all is well
no worries on typos in this thread!
i am the QUEEN of fast typing typos haha
i am ALWAYS editing my posts to fix typos

yes we will have to wait for these areas to be facing us, once they rotate over the eastern edge, they are named with a number then monitored
i will look tomorrow evening at what old sunspots these are that will be rotating our way

edit: see, had to edit this for fast typing typos haha

Thanks for thinking of me NiN. I check your thread daily...just usually in a big yank because of work. I rarely miss a day checking out what is happening. I'm really grateful for this thread with it's no-nonsense approach. No over the edge doom, unless necessary - yet no ignoring the facts.

Here is your EQ from the flare:
MAP 4.9 2011/08/09 04:43:39 -4.559 102.147 57.4 SOUTHERN SUMATRA, INDONESIA

I believe that was centered right in the midst of the orange area on the map. Notice the time. I'm not sure of the time that is given to a flare, but it started about 3:50 UTC and is just now coming back to the level it was prior to the flare, about 5:00 UTC. How was that EQ for timing?

Beatty is over 2 hours from Lake Mead.

Ever since the Hawthorne swarm started up last year, seems Nevada has
become a lot more active. I think a 5.0 to a 7.0 will eventually settle things down.

Am loving this thread, and don't want to deflect, but there is a growing amount of interest in the two 'companions' coming in with Elenin. At least two observatories have them up on their sites. Maybe there is some growing interplay between the nearing comets and the Sun?

I note we've all had an eye out for big earthquakes over the last few days - so apologies if it has already been mentioned.

Three of the supervolcanoes in New Zealand experienced quakes >4.5M on the 6th August, and more quakes of larger magnitude again today.

Not seeing a cme associated with the X...it did splatter the screen with the initial blast so earth has probably already took most of the hit already...I think we got lucky this didn`t happen a few days ago...Wow..things are waking up..

kevin from solarham says it had a very week CME and weak radio blackout...well weaker than the M 9.3 we had last week anyhow
