SOLAR WATCH * Huge X8.2 Flare Sept. 10, 2017! (Updated Daily) | |
Simple27 User ID: 51550563 United States 12/14/2013 03:50 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I don't see where is the alarm.. it's any alarm about this normal meteor shower? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 51316929 Alarm? No, I was just giving a heads-up to anyone with clear dark skies to witness the Geminids at peak activity. To see 100-200 meteors an hour is a very rare and awe-inspiring thing to behold. And although meteor showers are predictable as far as timing, the actual numbers and strength of the display are not. I saw 2 late last night/early this morning while I was still in Florida. It was pretty amazing because it was very cloudy, but a clear patch came across the sky and I got to see 2 just minutes apart : ) ~*Ride the Wave*~ |

Quoting: Hugh M Eye While reviewing the SDO images from today I kept seeing tongues of plasma shooting from behind the south-eastern limb. Upon checking the STEREO Behind EUV movie, I found a large crackling, sparkling region about to berzerk. Unfortunately it's still 3-4 days away from Earth-side visibility. STEREO B EUV movie: [link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov] That old CIR (Co-rotating Interaction region) fooled me again last night, haha. Update-Solar Wind .24 hr Summary... Solar wind parameters, measured at ACE, were indicative of a co-rotating interaction region (CIR) followed by negative polarity coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS) effects. Solar wind speed was initially steady at around 300 - 330 km/s and increased to around 400 km/s after 14/0045 UTC. Total field strength values ranged from 4 nT to 15 nT while the Bz component ranged from +14 nT to -11 nT. The phi angle began the period in a positive (away) sector and transitioned to a negative (toward) sector around 14/0000 UTC. .Forecast... Solar wind speed is expected to remain enhanced for days one and two (14 - 15 Dec) due to a combination of waning CH HSS influence and arrival of the 12 Dec CMEs. A return to nominal solar wind values are expected for day three (16 Dec) with return to a nominal solar wind environment. It must be extreme as even NOAA noticed it, LOL. .24 hr Summary... Solar activity was at low levels. The largest flare was a C2/Sf at 14/1124 UTC from Region 1917 (S15W24, Dkc/beta-gamma). Growth and consolidation in the northernmost spots was observed in Region 1917. The rest of the spotted regions were relatively stable. New Region 1926 (N09W01, Cro/beta) was numbered today. Several coronal mass ejections (CMEs) were observed today in SOHO/LASCO C2 imagery, however all appeared to be backsided. The majority of the activity on the backside appeared to be from old Region 1913 (S14, L=268) which is due to rotate back onto the visible disk on 17 December. I still feel a little queasy when they say this is one of the weakest maximums recorded, because at the same time they admit that we have not yet experienced maximum... Feels like we should perhaps wait until the poles finish flipping and this sequence finishes unfolding before we compare it to other cycles. Anonymous Coward User ID: 51577363 Portugal 12/15/2013 09:04 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Posted on December 14, 2013 by The Extinction Protocol December 14, 2013 – SPACE — The sun’s current space-weather cycle is the most anemic in 100 years, scientists say. Our star is now at “solar maximum,” the peak phase of its 11-year activity cycle. But this solar max is weak, and the overall current cycle, known as Solar Cycle 24, conjures up comparisons to the famously feeble Solar Cycle 14 in the early 1900s, researchers said. “None of us alive have ever seen such a weak cycle. So we will learn something,” Leif Svalgaard of Stanford University told reporters here today (Dec. 11) at the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union. The learning has already begun. For example, scientists think they know why the solar storms that have erupted during Solar Cycle 24 have caused relatively few problems here on Earth. The sun often blasts huge clouds of superheated particles into space, in explosions known as coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Powerful CMEs that hit Earth squarely can trigger geomagnetic storms, which in turn can disrupt radio communications, GPS signals and power grids. But such effects have rarely been seen during Solar Cycle 24, even though the total number of CMEs hasn’t dropped off much, if at all. The explanation, researchers said, lies in the reduced pressure currently present in the heliosphere, the enormous bubble of charged particles and magnetic fields that the sun puffs out around itself. This lower pressure has allowed CMEs to expand greatly as they cruise through space, said Nat Gopalswamy of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. Indeed, Solar Cycle 24 CMEs are, on average, 38 percent bigger than those measured during the last cycle — a difference with real consequences for folks here on Earth. “When the CMEs expand more, the magnetic field inside the CMEs has lower strength,” Gopalswamy said. “So when you have lower-strength magnetic fields, then they cause milder geomagnetic storms.” –Space.com [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com] |
