Scroll down near bottom of page to the 24 Years Ago part Quoting: whiteangel [link to www.solarham.net] AR5395 measured 2200 millionths and...... "Sunspot cluster 5395 was so big and ugly, it dented the sun and disturbed scientists. The most complex patch of sunspots ever recorded, this pulsating black region 54 times the size of Earth started edging its way around the eastern rim of the sun on March 6, 1989. As it came into view at observatories around the world, researchers wondered: What next? For nearly two weeks, the region of sunspots -- areas of intense magnetic disturbances on the sun's surface -- spewed out nearly 200 solar flares, or explosions on the solar disk. One such eruption launched a stream of radiation for 10 hours. X-rays, meanwhile, roiled away from the sun's surface, reaching Earth in 8 minutes, 20 seconds. What followed was the most dramatic space weather event recorded in modern times. By March 13, the Earth's magnetosphere, or magnetic shell, was getting pummeled by a rain of high energy protons at least 100 times the norm. Atmospheric drag in the planet's electrified and heated upper atmosphere caused satellites to drop out of orbit, and many suffered outages and scrambled communications. Satellites in the Global Positioning System (GPS), critical in navigation and the accurate launching of military missiles, in a few cases were transmitting wrong information. In a series of spooky phenomena, North Sea oil companies halted drilling as their magnetic instruments went awry. Radio signals faded to static. And stray electrical currents caused several power grids in North America to suffer blackouts and costly damage, including the destruction of a $10 million transformer in Salem, N.J. In the most frightening outcome, a cascading outage at Canada's Hydro-Quebec power system caused tens of millions in damages in less than a day, leaving 6 million people without electricity in the dead of winter. With power cooperatives to the south relying on exports from Hydro-Quebec, the entire Northeast United States narrowly escaped a blackout. great article continues here: [link to www.jhu.edu] TIMED Satellite Mission: [link to www.timed.jhuapl.edu] |

Doesn't that make y'all feel a little warmer, LOL. 'If you’re feeling particularly chummy with the Sun today, like you two seem really close for some reason, then you may be right: Today at 12:00 UTC (07:00 EST) the Earth is at perihelion, the point in its orbit when it’s closest to the Sun. At that time, the center of the Earth is 147,104,780 kilometers (91,406,672 miles) from the Sun. The Earth’s orbit is an ellipse, so sometimes we’re farther from the Sun and sometimes closest (the farthest point is called aphelion). The average distance of the Earth from the Sun is about 149,597,871 km (just a hair under 93 million miles — this distance is called an Astronomical Unit or AU), but due to the eccentricity (the ellipticalness, to coin a word) of the orbit that distance can vary by about two or so million kilometers either way.' more here: [link to socialreader.com (secure)] |

Police dispatcher. I was in NM yet I was hearing and able to talk to police officers in Houston when they couldn't reach their own dispatcher. My officers were talking to Houston dispatch when they couldn't reach me. We ended up with a dedicated phone line between their huge department and my small department. It was scary trying to make sure their officers were safe on the calls they were on, yet rather exciting as it was so busy! This happened for about a week and a half it seems. Wasn't a sun watcher, didn't have internet or cell phones and no way to monitor that stuff. We only knew that "skip" (radio waves) were bouncing all over the place. Kept getting an Asian speaking broadcast but never knew for sure where it was from as I couldn't understand them.
