Hi Sol crew,I thought I would share this pic with you guys.
Last night at dusk I noticed an orange looking star which I thought it to be Antares,
upon closer inspection and then consulting with Stellarium I realised it was Jupiter.

This pic was taken with no tracking or scope just picked up the camera and took this shot,
this pic is unprocessed straight off my Canon G10.

Enjoy [link to i1245.photobucket.com]

I will step out this morning to take some sol pics and see what 1967 looks like today.

Thanks all

Thanks, sounds banana2 ,that's amazing you can see some hints of the cloud bands on Jupiter with just a camera zoom. You can see the four Galilean moons with a good set of binos or a small scope. I do find the coloring odd because I saw Jupiter last night and it was bright and white; but I'm sure it has to do with atmospheric conditions (haze) and the angle of elevation. For me it was straight overhead. If I ever hit the lottery I want to get into some serious astrophotography. Us poor folk have to depend on NASA's pics, LOL.

NOAA's latest .24 hr Summary...

Solar activity was at moderate levels. Region 1967 (S13E16,
Fkc/beta-gamma-delta) produced an M1/1f flare at 01/0125 UTC and an
M3/1b at 01/0723 UTC. The intermediate area of Region 1967 grew and
more spots emerged.
Only slight growth was observed in the intermediate
and trailing spots of Region 1968 (N10E15, Eai/beta-gamma) . New Region
1969 (S10W35, Bxo/beta) was numbered today. Dimming was observed in
SDO/AIA 193 imagery at 01/0512 UTC northwest of Region 1968 and at
01/1152 UTC in the southern hemisphere, south of Region 1967. No
Earth-directed coronal mass ejections (CME)s were observed.

Solar Wind

.24 hr Summary...
Solar wind speed at the ACE spacecraft reached 377 km/s at 01/1923Z.
Total IMF reached 6 nT at 01/1954Z. The maximum southward component of
Bz reached -5 nT at 01/1927Z. Around 01/1000 UTC, a solar sector
boundary change from away to toward occurred. The EPAM instrument
indicated a slow rise in low energy particles, signaling the approach
the anticipated CME.

Nice shot sounds. I wonder why it looks orange. Always looks crystal pure white when I see it. I also can spot a little bit of a moon usually too. Maybe there all behind the planet.

I was amazed to see the cloud bands as well and not to mention the colour,
due of course to the atmospheric conditions, as we just had a very hot day.

Hugh, I hope your numbers come in, but in the mean time you could always start off on the small and keep on building to it.
I am currently waiting on a mounting bracket for my new Maksutov Signature Series telescope.
Unfortunately I can’t afford to purchase the go to mount which would make it child’s play to navigate
that will have to wait.
For now I just have to make do with a motorized EQ2 mount.

The HMI 48-hour movie shows a tremendous amount of shape-shifting going on. This would indicate to me an increased probability of future volatility. After a slight decay this region appears to be gaining strength again as it enters the 'danger zone' for geo-effectiveness.

After 2+ years of watching this stuff, I've finally stumbled over the MOTHERLODE of secret CME information!!! Here's a belated Christmas present to y'all out there....first a sample from the M6.666 flare-CME (whose arrival we're now awaiting)-be sure to scroll all the way down:

[link to umbra.nascom.nasa.gov]

Why the hell does NASA hide this shit from us? Why couldn't they just provide a public link through their beloved mouthpiece Dr. Tony @ spaceweather.com or , better yet, just include it in the SOHO website? But NOOOOOOOOooooo, we'll just bury it for the 'insiders' to access. I'm overjoyed and pissed-off at the same time about this. Now I know why NOAA always says they have to wait for more data and analysis to evaluate a CME. THEY'RE WAITING FOR THIS PAGE !!!

Top Secret Index of CME data belonging to the American taxpayer:

Don't forget to bookmark this in case they disappear me, lol.
