whiteangel also known at WA User ID: 54218278 United States 02/25/2014 09:48 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Someone mentioned that the X-4.9 flare last night proves we still are in solar max. Not true. We can have large flares in solar minimum just like in solar maximum, just not as often. Geoeffective eruptive phenomena The solar magnetic field structures the corona, giving it its characteristic shape visible at times of solar eclipses. Complex coronal magnetic field structures evolve in response to fluid motions at the solar surface, and emergence of magnetic flux produced by dynamo action in the solar interior. For reasons not yet understood in detail, sometimes these structures lose stability, leading to coronal mass ejections into interplanetary space, or flares, caused by sudden localized release of magnetic energy driving copious emission of ultraviolet and X-ray radiation as well as energetic particles. These eruptive phenomena can have a significant impact on Earth's upper atmosphere and space environment, and are the primary drivers of what is now called space weather. The occurrence frequency of coronal mass ejections and flares is strongly modulated by the solar activity cycle. Flares of any given size are some 50 times more frequent at solar maximum than at minimum. Large coronal mass ejections occur on average a few times a day at solar maximum, down to one every few days at solar minimum. The size of these events themselves does not depend sensitively on the phase of the solar cycle. A good recent case in point are the three large X-class flares having occurred in December 2006, very near solar minimum; one of these (an X9.0 flare on Dec 5) stands as one of the brightest on record.[22] [link to en.wikipedia.org] Last Edited by WhiteAngel on 02/25/2014 09:48 AM Isaiah 5:20 KJV Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Possible delta area that I could see last night but it was still too turned to the east to tell for sure. Today, the delta looks much clear but still, the whole size is much smaller than I would have thought that could pop that 4.9. Any thoughts on it?? The field lines become very entangled a reversed magnetic flow made contact and it had a violent snapback, or.............. it knew it was going to be earth facing in a couple days and wanted to get rid of all its energy in one fell swoop. OR ITS THESE GUYS! Hello WA : ) The Delta is large and strong region sammiched right in the center region of the large Spot - A large Unipolar Sunspot with the opposite Polarity directly in the center is what makes this(made this)one of the best candidates for large Flares. It is listed as HKX,broken down that is - 'H - A unipolar sunspot group with penumbra(...)k - large, assymetric. Same structure as type 'a', but north-south diameter of penumbra is more than 2.5 degrees. Area, therefore, must be larger or equal than 250 millionths solar hemisphere(...)x - undefined for unipolar groups (class A and H)' - [link to sidc.oma.be] This makes it a Delta Class AR,ripe for decent power Flaring. Delta Definition - 'Delta. A complex magnetic configuration of a solar sunspot group consisting of opposite polarity umbrae within the same penumbra' Has anyone noticed that we appear to have a rare,cross-equatorial Flux with region 1987 [link to www.solen.info] Official coordinates - S01E37 - though the trailing appears to be about N01 - so,cross equatorial Sunspot : ) Pretty darn rare and should really be a good sign that full Reversal/exchange of Hemispheric Polarity is more or less complete...unless the Magnetic Cycle is somehow 'bust',lol.
