SOLAR WATCH * Huge X8.2 Flare Sept. 10, 2017! (Updated Daily) | |
Tampa Heather User ID: 57192133 United States 07/26/2014 11:22 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Thank you BERRY MUCH! Your tomato plants wouldn't know a velocity, would they? I mean, I know they would just be guessing for my entertainment purposes only ;) You really are a special one...you know that right? Btw, I have over 29 screen shots of this one :) from lasco, way slowed down... It reminds me of when you blow out a candle and the smoke billows up in a spiral fashion... Are we 'seeing' the reverse effect, by 'seeing' the plasma spiral out like that, of a 'thicker' medium between us and sol? It appears to me, that if you view my screen shots quickly, like a movie, you will notice what appears to be a denser whatever space is...lol...I hope you understand... Hugh M Eye User ID: 60775090 United States 07/26/2014 11:41 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | NASA's getting busy scrambling to hide their Mars orbiters from the dust tail of incoming Comet Siding Spring. "NASA is taking steps to protect its Mars orbiters, while preserving opportunities to gather valuable scientific data, as Comet C/2013 A1 Siding Spring heads toward a close flyby of Mars on Oct. 19. The comet's nucleus will miss Mars by about 82,000 miles (132,000 kilometers), shedding material hurtling at about 35 miles (56 kilometers) per second, relative to Mars and Mars-orbiting spacecraft. At that velocity, even the smallest particle -- estimated to be about one-fiftieth of an inch (half a millimeter) across -- could cause significant damage to a spacecraft. NASA currently operates two Mars orbiters, with a third on its way and expected to arrive in Martian orbit just a month before the comet flyby. Teams operating the orbiters plan to have all spacecraft positioned on the opposite side of the Red Planet when the comet is most likely to pass by. "Three expert teams have modeled this comet for NASA and provided forecasts for its flyby of Mars," explained Rich Zurek, chief scientist for the Mars Exploration Program at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. "The hazard is not an impact of the comet nucleus, but the trail of debris coming from it. Using constraints provided by Earth-based observations, the modeling results indicate that the hazard is not as great as first anticipated. Mars will be right at the edge of the debris cloud, so it might encounter some of the particles -- or it might not." more here: [link to www.jpl.nasa.gov] Comet Siding Spring page: [link to mars.jpl.nasa.gov] Last Edited by Hugh M Eye on 07/26/2014 11:43 PM |

Hugh M Eye User ID: 60775090 United States 07/27/2014 03:42 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Solar Granules and Faculae- Each granule or bubble of hot gas bobs to the surface, spreads out, and releases a tiny fraction of the Sun's heat and light into the vastness of interplanetary space. Cooled by expansion, the gas then sinks back down into the dark valleys separating the granules. Faculae are concentrations of the Sun's magnetic energy that fleck the granules' walls; they're best seen when granules are viewed in profile near the edge of the Sun, giving us a sideways view. Faculae appear bright because concentrated magnetic energy makes the solar gases more transparent than otherwise. Our line of sight pierces deeper into the granules where the gas is denser and radiates more intensely. Think of it as staring into glowing coals within their shells of ash. Sunspot magnetic fields are far stronger, and they cool the surrounding gases so much that the spots appear appear dark in comparison to the photosphere. Faculae are concentrated in much smaller bundles and appear bright instead. They're so plentiful compared to sunspots that they make the Sun 0.1% brighter at solar maximum than at solar minimum. - See more at: [link to www.skyandtelescope.com] |
Hugh M Eye User ID: 60775090 United States 07/27/2014 07:57 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | More Details on the STEREO Solar Conjunction Operations- [link to www.youtube.com (secure)] Q: What are the impacts of receiving reduced data from STEREO? A: Lack of STEREO observations used in NASA research models will severely limit the forecasting of solar storms throughout the solar system. There will be a single contact daily through a 70-meter antenna of NASA’s Deep Space Network. The reduced data rate for the data recorded on the spacecraft recorder will mean fewer data samples and lower definition images. The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association's Space Weather Prediction Center utilizes up to three views to constrain coronal mass ejection properties when forecasting geomagnetic storms. These views include the two STEREO spacecraft and one from SOHO. Lack of STEREO data will result in NOAA SWPC relying on the one SOHO coronagraph for space weather forecasting. more Q & A here: [link to www.nasa.gov] The main data limitation during this time is that only real-time data will be downloaded from the spacecraft. There will not be any playback of stored data. Also, because the signals from the spacecraft will be so much weaker than usual, only the largest 70 meter stations in the NASA Deep Space Network (DSN) will be used to bring down the data. Since there are only three 70 meter DSN stations, and they are heavily used by many NASA missions, this will further limit the amount of STEREO data that can be brought down. Taken together, this means that there will only be a few hours of data a day from each spacecraft. Unfortunately, there is insufficient room on the recorder to store any SECCHI data.
