we have a large prominence lift off in the northern region,
our new area above 1277 got a number
New region 11282 emerged in the northeast quadrant on August 29 and was number the next day by SWPC. There's some polarity intermixing
[link to www.solen.info]

on SDO this morning, we can see this intermixing with some connectivity going on in the whole region of 1277 and 1282
the north polar coronal hole is almost gone again.
[link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov]
a strong indicator that we will start seeing large activity of flares and CMEs starting again.

looking at the Magnetogram on SDO, we can see there is fast growth today of regions 1280, 1281 and 1282

the most interesting being the neg- growth seen within the pos+ area of region 1281

Good morning,

:southernhemisphe:
Image shows the eastern hemisphere of the visible disc

Three new groups were numbered overnight. They were 1282, 1283 and 1284. The most interesting of these three groups is 1281. This group looks the best group to produce any C class solar flares. This group produced a C5 flare peaking at 2246z yesterday. Region 1284 emerged close to the south-west limb.

Further there is a active region behind the south-east limb that should rotate into view during the next 48 hours.

No C class solar flares have taken place so far today but further C class solar flares are expected

Current Conditions:

Geomagnetic Field: QUIET (Kp=1) | IMF B-total: 2.7 nT | IMF Bz: -0.9 nT south | Density: 0.7 Protons/cm3

Solar activity is low. Region NOAA 11283 produced a C2.2 flare overnight. The regions most likely to produce C-class activity today are NOAA 11281. 11282 and 11283. All are bright in H-alpha and appear to be growing.
NOAA 11284, S19 W67 (X= 829,Y=-351). Alpha region.

Unnumbered region, N12 W34 (X= 522,Y= 100). Beta region.

NOAA 11277, N18 W10 (X= 158,Y= 181). Alpha region.

NOAA 11282, N24 W09 (X= 136,Y= 278). Beta region. C-class flare possible.

NOAA 11279, N13 W03 (X= 49,Y= 97). Alpha region.

NOAA 11281, S20 E30 (X=-448,Y=-421). Beta region. C-class flare possible.

NOAA 11283, N12 E60 (X=-807,Y= 138). Beta region. C-class flare possible.

Positions as of August 31, 2011 at 17:00 UT.

Got this min ago..:

The day the Earth flips out- scientists race to unravel mystery of planet’s magetic field

Earthquakes, explosions and observations of Earth’s ever-changing magnetic field are helping scientists open up a new window on the heart of our planet. The magnetic field also acts as a protective barrier between us and some of the dangers of space, shielding us from radiation in the solar wind. The Earth’s magnetic field has been steadily weakening over the past 180 years. And there is one patch that is weakening faster than any other. It is an area scientists have dubbed the “South Atlantic Anomaly“, which sits over the South Atlantic and the centre of South America.

This seems to be one of the largest pockets of flucuation or weakening. There are several others. The theory goes that as the poles weaken the fields flucuate with increasing numbers of pockets moving around the globe before finally making a complete reverse.

well i guess then i will take the odd bet on a magnetic merger between 1277 and 1282
but ill also place something on 1283 as well
hmmm i also have to say i think we will see something decent from 1281 (this based on todays growth)

I knew that would get your goat!

I was thinking the 1277 + 1282 combo as well, because we sure have seen those before. I will not be suprised to see that work out. 1282 actually is similarly configured to the last region that gave a lot of activity..
