Yes, you all are clearly protected — protected from appreciating the transcendent beauty of the Universe you live in. But hey, sure — whatever higher power you believe in is intervening to save your iPods and smartphones. Idiots.

Re: SOLAR WATCH * Huge X8.2 Flare Sept. 10, 2017! (Updated Daily)
Preliminary data show that NOAA 12192 is by far the biggest group of the last 2 decades, dwarfing all the other big sunspot groups of SC24, such as NOAA 11967 from February 2014 (1580MH). This giant group is even bigger than the Halloween group NOAA 10486 from October 2003 and famous NOAA 9393 from March 2001. On 23 October 2014, NOAA 12192 had a sunspot area of 2740MH according to NOAA (3836MH Greenwich), making it almost in the Top 10 of largest sunspot groups observed since 1874. Solar Cycle Prediction

(Updated 2014/09/10)

The current prediction for Sunspot Cycle 24 gives a smoothed sunspot number maximum of about 70 in late 2013. The smoothed sunspot number reached 75.4 in November 2013) so the official maximum will be at least this high. The smoothed sunspot number has been rising again towards this second peak over the last five months and has now surpassed the level of the first peak (66.9 in February 2012). Many cycles are double peaked but this is the first in which the second peak in sunspot number was larger than the first. We are currently over five years into Cycle 24. The current predicted and observed size makes this the smallest sunspot cycle since Cycle 14 which had a maximum of 64.2 in February of 1906.

I don't recall ever seeing an aurora like that before. The ones I've seen (via the Astronauts aboard the ISS) have been inevitably flat looking.

Have you guys noticed a sudden uptick in the lower level flares ? Between the previous x flares we have seen high level C flares and few M flares. Now after the previous x flare we have had low to mid level M flares. The sun has consistent patterns to flaring in my experience as an amateur solar watcher. I think a much larger x flare is brewing within the next 48 hours.

That means near nothing. In fact 60 degree latitude on the earth side facing of the sun is
considered more dangerous then the center. Here read up a little. [link to science.nasa.gov]

I bet your right. I believe we need an X5 or above to make a CME happen. I just wish we had SOHO type satellites in the stereo A and B positions. Then we could of seen how this spot even fired a CME in the first place.
