Actually, a few dates come to mind but March 17, 2013, was special. An X-class solar flare — the strongest — was pointed directly at Earth, and it arrived on schedule. “The skies were beautiful, and it was magic,” Murray said. “We saw colors we’ve never seen any other night and spent a majority of the night with our cameras actually pointed to the southern sky. This may go down as the best event of the current solar cycle.” good article here: [link to www.newsminer.com] Two of his aurora vids: [link to vimeo.com] [link to vimeo.com] Sol Reflector |

Solar activity was low. Region 2268 (S10E09, Fkc/beta-gamma) remained the largest and most complex region on the disk and produced the largest event of the period, a C5/Sf at 27/2359 UTC [WRONG]. Region 2273 (S03W12, Dao/beta) produced the a C2/Sf at 27/0547 UTC. The region showed moderate growth during the past 24 hours. Regions 2271 (N18W18, Dai/beta-gamma) and (S17W26, Dai/beta-gamma) also showed moderate growth during the the period. The other regions on the disk remained relatively stable. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed. [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov] The tards at Solarsoft are also 15 hours behind events. Be prepared-this could be another very active period coming up. The x-ray background is a huge indicator of the flare potential. [link to sol24.net] Sol Reflector |

Sol Reflector User ID: 62521526 United States 01/27/2015 10:51 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'm mostly lost myself, LOL. Occasionally, I have the time and I notice a few little things going on. The beauty of this thread is that somebody always picks up the slack if events unfold. If I disappear again somebody will grab the reins I'm sure (maybe you, Isis). I really miss Ninzrez, IWTB76, Tomagod1, Spittin Cesium, Truthseeker66, LookinThru You and other contributors from bygone days. Things have been slowing down of late, so I'm not always alert to every coronal hole or filament. Face it, it gets boring when not much is happening. Still, we're nowhere near solar minimum and lots of activity will occur soon. Maybe the next big event we can get a pin (oh No!) just to get some fresh blood to contribute to what has become a monumental thread and a vibrant discussion of all-things-cosmic. Sol Reflector |

Sol Reflector User ID: 62521526 United States 01/28/2015 08:01 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | We had an impulsive M1 flare from our new friend AR2277 in the NE. This region looks seriously scrambled magnetically. Maybe we'll see an X-flare soon..... NOAA Solar Activity 24 hr Summary... Solar activity reached moderate levels. Region 2268 (S10E02, Fkc/beta-gamma) produced a M1/2n flare at 28/0441 UTC, followed by a M1/Sf flare at 28/2137 UTC from Region 2277 (N07E67, Hax/Alpha). Neither flare had associated radio signatures that would indicate associated coronal mass ejections (CMEs). LASCO coronagraph imagery seemed to support this analysis as no CMEs were clearly visible in imagery. This region exhibited signs of growth in its intermediate spot area. The other regions on the visible disk remained relatively stable.
