This one was brighter than most Kreutz comets, but it was hardly 'massive'. Comets always look exaggerated in coronagraphs because of the bleeding saturated pixels. Comets are 1000's of times smaller than the moon, yet they look bigger than Venus in coronagraph images.

SDO is still offline! This is getting quite serious. We've already lost EVE and STEREO Behind; SDO's demise would be almost unbearable.

I can't find any other source for latest Earth-side solar images besides SOHO. My HINODE link shows a 404-not found.

NOAA may have to revert to sitting at a telescope and drawing the sunspots in pencil--just like the grand old days, haha. Thankfully with zero sunspots, NOAA-tards should have no problems with the math, lol.

What satellites? SDO is back in science mode, if that's what you mean.

Volcanism? Give us a link 'cause I know not what you're referring to.


If volcanism or earthquakes were solar-related, both would be nearly non-existent now; as we're experiencing the weakest solar cycle in over a 100 years.

By the way, they're expecting 100-year record low temps in New Zealand this weekend. (shhhh...don't tell NOAA their baking planet is freezing over,Lol).

Here is one, nothing will happen, see?
Some flares or similar , nice auroras and that's it, protons maybe rise a bit or we have a magnetic "storm" so what or some volcano shakes more than the normal, it happens every month and here we are.

Just sharing some volcano info. Not saying anything about it being related to solar activity/non-activity or otherwise.

Sunspot Number jumps from 0 to 37...at least it's a sign of life.

We actually had a C1 flare today from AR2570....or was it 2572? Lockheed Solarsoft attributes the flares to 2570 which disappeared and then reappeared. NOAA claims the reappearance is a new sunspot AR2672. I love it when these two overlapping, over-budgeted agencies bicker with each other; especially when not much else is happening.

Solarsoft has just acquiesced to NOAA since I typed the above paragraph. I'll wager that Lockheed's staff has a higher pedigree of solar physics expertise, but NOAA has the advantage of bureaucratic standing and golden parachute government benefits (and all the weed you can smoke!). NOAA gets their way, but Lockheed sticks it in their face, haha.

NOAA Solar Activity 24 hr Summary...

Solar activity was low with a C1 flare at 05/1012 UTC from Region 2572
(N13W46, Dao/beta). Region 2572 contributed several B-class flares and
grew in both spot count and area during the summary period. The other
spotted region on the visible disk, Region 2571 (N13E09, Dro/beta) was
stable and unremarkable. No Earth directed CMEs occurred during the
period.

Earthquakes and volcanoes may very well be related. Recent research hints that EQ's may trigger volcanoes.

From Science-- But scientists have long wondered why big earthquakes are sometimes followed by small volcanic eruptions far from the quake’s epicenter. Even Charles Darwin mused about the connection in 1835, wondering whether Chile’s great Concepción earthquake—which devastated the town of the same name—could have been linked to the eruption of the volcano Osorno he observed only a month later.

More recently, the massive 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines was suggestively preceded by a magnitude-7.7 earthquake centered 100 kilometers away the previous year. A 2009 study, by volcanologist David Pyle and his colleagues at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, found that eruption rates of volcanoes in Chile significantly increased in the 12 months following any earthquakes of magnitude 8 or above.

Scientists have put forward plenty of explanations for a possible link between earthquakes and volcanoes. These include the idea that shockwaves from the quakes can cause mushy semisolid magmas to liquefy into something more likely to erupt, or even that earthquakes can accelerate the growth of bubbles in magma, which can increase magma pressures. But no one has quite managed to explain why only some volcanoes seem affected by earthquakes, why their responses can take anywhere from days to months, and why the events can vary from tiny bursts of gas to full-blown eruptions.

I tend to believe that volcanic activity is a positive sign that the Earth's molten core dynamo is still healthy, hence, a strong magnetosphere. Although a Yellowstone caldera eruption would kill millions; the loss of our magnetosphere would kill BILLIONS of humans and most other life on the planet over time.

The southeastern United States has been hit by a series of strange unexplained quakes - most recently, the 2011 magnitude-5.8 earthquake near Mineral, Virginia that shook the nation's capital.

Researchers have been baffled, believing the areas should be relatively quiet in terms of seismic activity, as it is located in the interior of the North American Plate, far away from plate boundaries where earthquakes usually occur.

Now, they believe the quakes could be caused by pieces of the Earth's mantle breaking off and sinking into the planet.

Hi! I was out tonight for about 1 1/2 hours. Saw four small falling stars and a dozen satellites. I saw two of them at the same time, different altitudes. That was interesting. I was using binoculars. Almost got the telescope out to look at Mars, its so freaking gorgeous.
