NASA to announce new details on mission to 'touch the sun'

NASA is set to release new details this week about the agency's "unprecedented" mission to "touch the sun."

The mission, Solar Probe Plus, will launch in summer of 2018 and marks the agency's first mission to fly into the sun's atmosphere. Data collected during the mission is expected to improve forecasting of space weather events that impact life on Earth and the lives of astronauts, NASA said in a statement.

NORTHERN LIGHTS SPILL DEEP INTO THE USA: On May 27th, a solar coronal mass ejection (CME) swept past Earth. At first, for several hours, the seemingly weak impact barely disturbed our planet's magnetic environment. Then the storms began. As Earth passed through the CME's wake, energetic particles poured through a crack in Earth's magnetosphere, sparking a strong G3-class geomagnetic storm. At the height of the storm on May 28th, auroras were sighted in more than 20 US states.

The show did not stop at Nebraska. Northern Lights descended even farther south to Colorado, California and even Arizona. "After midnight the sky turned pink and a green ray extended up from the horizon," reports Chris Schur of Payson AZ. " This is the best aurora here in Arizona in over a decade!"

Whoa, that was pretty massive! Not sure how it won't affect earth. I bet magnetic field lines bring some of it our way.

The Colorado one looks more like one of those proton streams they don't understand.

Possible Geo-effective Eruption | May 30, 2017

Typical long duration Filament Eruption generating minor ribbons flare and possible CME with Earth-directed component (Not visible on coronographs yet).

Most of plasma ejected seems to come back to the Sun's atmosphere as Coronal Rain.

Looked like a big component of the sheet separated and headed earthward to me.

Any one notice we are seeing terms like this more often

Anyone else completely shocked that the CME from the filament release yesterday has yet to show up on SOHO and subsequently CACtus?

Also the ENlil Spiral and ISWA's spiral still havent updated to show any CME??

There is definitely an Earth directed component...

Yes, I said same thing, what kind of language is solar explosion???? It's either a cme, a filament eruption or a coronal hole stream. We also get CIR's and sep's.

I thought so too but I see spaceweather.com is telling us in bold letters today there isn't earth directed component.

If its going to miss its going to be a really really close miss... Youd think they would still update the spirals to show the miss... I'm definitely a little weirded out by this...

I always thought SpaceWeather got their information the same way we do... SDO, SOHO, CACtus, GONG, ect - how do they have know this information when we dont even have the images yet?

To me it appears as though a decent amount of the eruption heads south - but now when I look at SOHO it doesnt seem like there are any missing images...

So could the biggest portion of the CME actually be hiding behind teh coronagraph??

We have ALL seen small filament eruptions cause lightbulb CMEs and clearly show up on SOHO - something is different this time...

S0 mentioned this possibility in his video this morning. Worth a listen regardless of opinions on the guy.
