I humbly disagree on the laptop question. I've seen no evidence for this. If this is true than no motor vehicles will start either. Your computer may not have any wireless or wired connections to outside, but I believe it would still work on battery power anyway.

Yep- if earth facing.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1540313

No, but it would most likely kill the internet. Your radio may work but it may be impossible to hear anything but static. Most vulnerable to the build-up of electrons are long metallic things like oil & gas pipelines, long-distance electrical transmission cables, and phone cables, etc. Large transformers could overload and cause blackouts-and worse case scenario-bring down the entire electrical grid. Your battery-powered flashlight, etc. would be unaffected.
I think AC has this confused w/ EMP weapon.
 Quoting: Hugh M Eye

[link to science.nasa.gov] as above, laptop would be no good- I did not confuse anything.

Nothing is this article even hints that laptops would be dead. Maybe if your on the ISS,LOL. Read it again.
 Quoting: Hugh M Eye

I said , as YOU stated, laptops useless because of all other broken comm. lines- not laptop itself fried, just the entire system laptops depend on. (After bat.run out)Same w/radio- may be able to still pick up something, but much less because of all the infrastructure that supports radio brodcast.

Hmmmm. That would force communities to bring back the Town Crier. Smoke signals worked pretty good for Native Americans....except on really windy days.
And don't forget carrier pigeons. They might need a good sunscreen....SPF 1000 probably. rex

So what would happen to my portable solar panel.....and the power pack I would run small appliances off? The solar panel just gathers energy, and transfers it to the power pack, so verycoolno problem right?

 Quoting: Hugh M Eye

The effect of another Carrington Event would be similar to that of a global electromagnetic pulse (EMP). Anything electronic would be fried
but fact of the matter is, it would all depend on the strength of the solar storm that hits, along with the condition of our magnetosphere when it hits
so its very hard to tell the effects of any given solar storm
The carrington event was so strong that the Telegraph machines in the offices caught on fire. thats a STRONG event! if we had the same strength of a storm today, if it was strong enough to catch telegraph machines on fire, i believe it would do the same to our handheld electronics of today
but in the end, we are left with only what we may believe, that is, until it happens again
then, and only then will we truly know the effects of such an event on todays society and electronics :)
Here is a video where they talk about a recent NASA report about a modern day carrington
