yes, but.. earth and it's magnetosphere are in much worst shape than it was in 2003
we therfore can not compare 2011 solar/earth events in equal format to 2003 solar/earth events

lots has happened in the last 8 years and we live in a differant world in 2011 than we did in 2003
we now have to ask, if we got the same solar events hit earth now, as we did then.. would the effects be the same?
my answer is a big NO

i talked with Tom about that object when it 1st showed on the HI2 image
it is a CME
more than likley the one that hit yesterday

1302 is still a BGD sunspot region and is capable of produceing a large flare ay any time

Region 11302 [N14E23] relaxed further as the magnetic delta structure in the central penumbra decayed. The leading penumbra stretched out and could soon merge with the central penumbra. If that happens we could again see a situation with frequent and strong flaring.

That was a seperate area that was in question prior to this one.

well, now those worrie me some because i dont know much about them
i have never been much of one to watch space debris or comets
i just rely on what other experts have to say :/
so im watching and waiting like a lot of others on here

Ninz it's likely that the pyramid type structure on that video is not a cme. That type of effect is the result of stereo taking an image during a manoeuvre, it's a frequent occurrence particularly on the low-res beacon data.

Yes there's a small chance I could be wrong, but only because there are no subsequent images presented on the youtube video, this would confirm if it were a cme or manoeuvre.

Looks like a glitch on the sdo website, normally this web page presents images of the full solar disk in different wavelengths, what seems to have happened is some of the images aren't loading and others have zoomed in on active region 1302. A website bug in my opinion...

Relax, the sun hasn't blown up, or inflated etc.... lol

starting at 18:28 today, the SDO images are not of the whole sun, but focused on 1 sunspot

Just read an article in russian at tesis.lebedev.ru (site Laboratory of X-ray astronomy of the Sun, LPI RAS, Russia)

The article describes activities of the last days by analysing active region 1302.

"Two large flares (22 sep) from the same region of the sun is not a unique situation. However, any area after an outbreak takes a while to accumulate enough energy for the next big explosion. The fact that there were two events of the highest class says that the nature of solar activity in its maximum phase. It is not excluded that it may move the current forecast for solar maximum activity from 2013 back to the second half of 2012.
The activity at September 22, was accompanied by a large mass ejections, which, however, was not at an angle of 80 degrees to the Sun-Earth line, as a former event, and not Earth touching, but at closer range - about 50 degrees.
The reason is that due to the rotation of the Sun area the 1302 moves from day to day closer to the Sun-Earth line. As a result, an activity that may occur any day from now , can become geoeffective as 1302 will be directly at the Sun-Earth line area at September 28-29. If until that time, its level of activity does not decrease, "escape" from the solar plasma emissions will be difficult"

Some of you may notice that there are gaps in the data on GOES and SDO. The reason is that they are being eclipsed once a day again through Oct. 4 for SDO, and untill October 13 for GOES.


NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory has eclipse seasons twice a year near each equinox. For three weeks near midnight Las Cruces time (about 0700 UT) our orbit has the Earth pass between SDO and the Sun. These eclipses can last up to 72 minutes in the middle of an eclipse season. The current eclipse season started on September 11 and lasts until October 4.

The GOES satellites encounter two periods, during the year, which the satellites are in the Earth’s shadow. Known as the Eclipse season, these periods require the spacecraft to be totally dependent on onboard batteries for a maximum of 72 minutes daily. Eclipse’s occur from about February 28 - April 11 and August 31 - October 13. The Imager and Sounder instruments are powered down to conserve power, until the daily eclipse is over. There is a significant risk of the sun light directly entering the scanners, as the spacecraft enters and leaves the Earth’s shadow, requiring the Imager and Sounder to be idle prior to and following eclipse. This is known as the “Keep Out Zone”. The seasonal charts describe the GOES-East and GOES-West Imager and Sounder scan frames that are canceled, due to KOZ/ECLIPSE.
