Sorry for the stupid question, but assuming that something bigger fired today, the effects of it will be felt in two days, right?

It's look like a C5.6 for me or bigger but not even a M flare.
 Quoting: tmorais

High Watts/ msq = 8.6E-07

It goes up 4 times higher than it did during the c flare earlier today.

richard---the affect of the flare can reach earth in 8 to 10 minutes..if there was a CME associated with it then yest it would take a couple days to get here..CME`s travel at different sppeds so there are alot of variables

the data gaps are from the satellite eclipses
Tom posted about this yesterday or the day before

The fall eclipse season runs from approximately 30 or 31 August until 15 October
this eclipse has been seen 1 times each day on SDO, and 2 times each day one the GOES Xray flux
at the same times each day
around 6-7 UTC and then again around 18 UTC, (12 hours later)

NASA Satellite Photo Shows Earth Eclipsing the Sun
"For three weeks near midnight Las Cruces time (about 0700 UT) our orbit has the Earth pass between SDO and the sun," SDO scientists wrote in a statement. "These eclipses can last up to 72 minutes in the middle of an eclipse season

i cant find any info for the one around 18 UTC, but im sure its out there

I don't buy into conspiracy theories, but that's what this was starting to sound like. I hope you are saying that there is no conspiracy behind this, and it is simply a technical anomaly. So, do we know what happened during the blackout? Is there something big heading our way?

flares reach earth at the speed of light, and get here in around 8 minutes
if there is a CME with the flare, it gets here in around 2-4 days usually, depending on the force of ejection, thus the speed it is then traveling to earth

but there was NO major flare durring the Xray flux gap today
it was a C5.6 Flare from sunspot region 1305
starting at 17:57 and ending at 18:28

I'm one of the dumb sheeples, I have a question. I've looked at the pictures of the sun (following the links in this thread), my question is this - does the sun usually look as if the top is about to come off? By that I'm referring the ring running 1/3 from the top, it looks like it's joining up.

Sol I know you've had a real public image problem in the doom community. I'm afraid your loosing your street cred... I mean face it you really haven't had a real hit since the Carrington Event... Sure you pop a satellite here and there and even throw down some rad disco lights but your becoming yesterday's news.... So what do you say we layout a comeback tour! Yep just stroll in with a couple LDE M flares then through down a double X10 LDE, then drop down te beat and bammm grand finale X28 right in center stage! This would put you back on top of the charts my friend....,

I did some research and that planet that almost hit us spawned the show "Flash Gordon". First episode was 1936. Episode 1:

The Planet of Peril The planet Mongo is on a collision course with Earth. Dr. Alexis Zarkov takes off in a rocket ship to Mongo, with Flash Gordon and Dale Arden as his assistants. They find that the planet is ruled by the cruel Emperor Ming, who lusts after Dale and sends Flash to fight in the arena. Ming's daughter, Princess Aura, tries to spare Flash's life.

Both myself and colleagues agreed that both cme's had an earth directed trajectory on the Monday, they would arrive on Wednesday and we agreed that severe storming is unlikely during their passage.

Why couldn't NOAA do the same?
 Quoting: SolarManDan

Do you have a website where you post your predictions?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1414904

Yes, some of the discussion and predictions are publicly accessibile, but purely as a function for our students. To share the web addresses would be crazy, our tiny server would not cope. Sorry.

Any time that we predict major geomagnetic storming or we note anything that warrant's special interest, I will be happy to post on this thread. It is normally the only time I visit glp anyway (it's a good laugh when everyone is freaking out!)

What I do like about this thread is it's education value. Just browsing through now and again I can see several people learning a lot, then those people are sharing that knowledge with others.

However bear in mind that some people who post on here assume they know what they're talking about but unfortunately don't. For that reason it's best to give what Ninz says (and anyone he/she cites) the most weight.

you can see the SDO EVE image of the flare, and see that it is not that strong
here is a SDO EVE image of the flare in question
see how faint it is?
here is 2 images of a M flare
[link to www.solarham.com]
[link to www.qsl.net]
you can see how bright those are, and the differance between them

we can also see there is a very small gap in data here
[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]
now look close at the section at the top where the data starts up again, just after the data gap
we can see that is actually started back up right at the peek of the flare
we can see this because of the small curve in the blue line right where its peeking
if it was a larger flare, there would be no curve at all
it would be a straight sharp spiked line down
