Yes, I'll join the question party.. I'm not entirely up to snuff with solar doom.
Does this mean we are getting something earth directed within the next few hours?

Or is it just a theory?
Would it be considered safe to go about business this weekend and spend lots of time outdoors?

My city has an art festival this evening all night long & I had planned on attending. The risk with solar doom is mainly electronics & the grid right? or are people directly at risk as well?

I apologize in advance if my questions seem stupid.

Does anyone have an estimate of what kind of impact the CMEs will have on Earth? Is there any way to tell?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1619119

I think we are going to take a pretty hard hit from the CME launched during the M1.2 flare this morning from Region 1305. I believe this CME is moving faster than the calculated 500km/s that NOAA has estimated as well. I would expect to see todays CME arrive no later then the latter part of Oct. 3. This CME may catch up with the CME that was launched just 15 hrs prior from the same region during an M1.0 flare on Sept. 30, that was visibly moving at a much slower pace. It would be helpful if missing data would be made available. It is particularly aggravating that Stereo A is missing nearly 4 hrs of data from 10:54UT through 14:39UT today during the eruption of the CMEs from Regions 1301, 1302, and 1305. IMO we will see the Est. Planetary Kp in the 7 to 8 range, moderate to severe geomagnetic storming especially in northern latitudes.

Joinca thank you that link appears to work. have you got any ideas for NOAA links, every time I manage to access the site through another site the link will only work for a few days. I know its a problem with my internet provider but its really frustrating.

Here's a SDO movie of the double-whammy CME earlier today-A stong C flare from 1302 and a M1.2 from 1305.

look at the movie for Oct 2nd
you have to click "Oct 1st" then change it to the 2nd manualy
with the 304, 211, 171
what a trip!
the filters must be messed up some
but with it mess up on that composite, you can see the CME are SUPER good

There is alot of Darker Filaments in this Image of Sol currently that look like they are ready to start Peeling away from the Surface,
Top-Right stretching through the Top-Mid Latitude and Mid-Bottom winding through to the Bottom-Left,which already looks like it may of began Peeling itself away from the Surface at the Time the Image was Taken..
[link to sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov]
 Quoting: Spittin'Cesium

To follow up on the Filaments that looked unstable and ready to go..
[link to sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov]

The Upper-Right Filament is looking very impressive!
Its' stretching all the way from SP 1302 across the Mid Northern Latitude almost reaching the opposite side..this looks like it is tearing away from the Suns' Surface.
Look at the Bottom-Left Filament that appears to be funneling in toward the Sunspot..Awesome.

Thanks!!! You have an awesome thread by the way. I really would love to learn more so I don't have to always ask. I keep hearing what scientists said about the last glancing blow we had from a CME. Basically they thought if it had been a direct hit we would have been screwed. I wonder whats coming for us 3rd-4th.
