NASA Science Chief stepped down 2 days ago... He was in charge of the heliophysics division. He had been with NASA for 32 years... now gone. They have no replacement for him so the deputy chief is filling in. Interesting timing, no?

Er, ya know I mean northwest limb. Anyway here's the latest bulletin from SIDC on the CME's. They count 3 on the way (of course we know better) and first arrival expected Oct 3 (soon).

Latest solar magnetic field lines seem to indicate a weakening (or at least more chaotic) connecton between 1302 & 1305. However, western hemisphere seems to have intensified connections especially lines reaching from north to south. I wonder what this signifies.

Double eruption reported on solar surface- geomagnetic storm alert

On October 1st around 10:17 UT, widely-spaced sunspots 1302 and 1305 erupted in quick succession, revealing a long-distance entanglement which was not obvious before. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) recorded the double blast: Since it was launched in 2010, SDO has observed many “entangled eruptions....”

Re: SOLAR WATCH * 312 M & 25 X FLARES starting 3-7-2011 (Updated Daily)
okay some update:

this morning a M3.9 solar flare took place peaking at 0050z from region 1305

[link to www.lmsal.com]

The two largest groups saw region 1302 decrease in size slightly but is still a FKC, Beta Gamma Delta type group while region 1305 increased in size slightly to a DSO, Beta gamma type group.

A new group rotated into view over the north-east limb yesterday. There is a group on the backside of the Sun which produced a large solar flare yesterday morning, this is still more than a week away before rotating into view.

At least two coronal mass ejections appear to be Earthbound and are due late on the 2nd or the 3rd.

:newsunspotsoctob:
Image shows the collection of groups in the northern hemisphere

Video from Kevin(Solarham)

Several Coronal Mass Ejections are seen in this STEREO Behind COR2 movie. The first one was caused by a long duration M1.2 solar flare on Oct 1 around Sunspot 1305. The second was a farside event. The 3rd was during the early hours of Oct 2nd and resulted from an M3.9 Solar Flare around Sunspot 1305. Also notice the sundiving comet.

Yes, magnetically connected-but what is the significance of the cross-equatorial connection? I have a hunch it's meaningful, but I don't know why.

Dont know if or how this relates, but I live in the Orlando FL area, although between cocoa beach and Orlando. It is rural and easy to see the stars on a clear night.

Last night at about 11pm and than again at about 4 am myself and two others saw a fireball shoot across the sky, very low, very large. It looked like it had orange fire coming out of its "tail" and was so low that the trees blocked it within about 2 seconds. Being so close to Kennedy space cntr, we see shuttle launches all the time, and the fire coming off this thing was like that of the rocket booster minus the smoke, only it was coming in a downward direction across the horizon.

When I see shooting stars they are high in the sky and white, this was nothing like that. Was there anything satallite like or something supposed to come down over the weekend?

LASCO COR 2 seems to show more coronal mass being ejected. Most likely from the earlier C flare. Solarsoft has no listing of this flare, yet it's clearly seen on the X-rat flux. Looking at the imagery, I would surmise it's a 1302 eruption. Appears to be a partial-halo event.

That's interesting because I'm in Key West and Friday night about an hour after sunset there was a fairly large bright green fireball with a bright orange/white tail that shot across sky from East to West going slightly up and then disappeared behind a large cloud but never reappeared .. it shocked me how slowly it was moving nothing at all like a shooting star .. I see alot of strange things in the sky in Florida but that was different !

Amateur sky-watcher photographs X-flare on Sept 22.
[link to www.space.com]
 Quoting: Hugh M Eye

When Brahic was observing the sun, he was watching an area that scientists have named Active Region 1302, or AR 1302. He had just come home from work on Sept. 22, when he spotted the dazzling prominence of solar plasma through a sun observation telescope. [Stunning Photos of Solar Flares & Sun Storms]

"And there it was, a shock!" Brahic told SPACE.com in an email. He then switched to a different telescope to snap a photo of the event. "The image, which I saw through the screen of my computer, was fabulous! This gigantic arc rose above the solar limb … we are really little things in front of these celestial [events]."

The massive sunspot region 1302 has produced two X-flares (X1.4 on Sept. 22 and X1.9 on Sept. 24) and is so large it can be seen without a telescope. (WARNING: NEVER stare at the sun with your unshielded eyes, binoculars or a telescope. Permanent eye damage can result Astronomers and skywatchers use special filters to observe the sun.)

Sunspots expand and contract as they move across the surface of the sun and can be as large as 50,000 miles (80,467 kilometers) in diameter. The diameter of AR 1302 has been measured at a whopping 62,000 miles (99,780 km), several times bigger than Earth.
