Looks like a second wave is hitting us now-shields seem to holding up well, tho.

Kp Index has now jumped to 5-STORM level.
[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

Solar Wind speed back up to 525.9 km/sec

Density back up to 13.8 protons per cubic cm.

[link to www.spaceweather.com]

Bz=12.1 nT south. NOAA data plots here:

 Quoting: Hugh M Eye

Are we still within "safe" levels though? I remember about a month ago, someone said the top left simulation here ... the 'tentacles' should be wrapped tightly when we are being hit. That we don't want to see them ummm spread out like this.

[link to www2.nict.go.jp]
 Quoting: Shenue

The initial wave was pretty weak and then faded-but now things are getting bumpy. If the big CME hit us straight on we may've been in a bit of trouble, but this is just the edge of the wave so we should be fine. There's really no way of knowing when a particular satellite may malfunction or if GPS will go off-until it happens.

Kp Index at Longyearbyen, Norway is at Storm level 6-everywhere else is at 4 or 5 right now.

I always forget about Nins' Solar Thread!

Went and Posted an Magnetotard Thread myself without thinking.

With these consecutive images I think you can see the Inner Magnetosphere Lines snap out and capture Energy from the Outer Shell and then re-coiling back with the Inner Magnetosphere loaded as a result..

Its' strange that the Velocity of the Solar Wind is relatively Low..There must have been a fair bit of Energy in this Event/s.

Took quite a shock it seems. Spaceweather.com is reporting magnetic field compression all the way down to geo-synchronus orbit. Satellite TV may be a little fuzzy this evening, lol.

Here's the infamous ground-current plots from Norway.

You can see the pressure at high levels about an hour ago. Glad I'm not in a plane or a space station tonight.

Yeah, I've never seen such a high storm level with this low SW velocity. I know there were several major CMEs, but none was directly in our face. This seems quite strong for a glancing blow. Here's the NOAA satellite environment plots:

Hi, Tardis. Look at this list of CMEs. Scroll down to 0038 and watch the clip-the first CME I think is the one we're dealing with. At the end of clip you'll see the large Mars-directed CME.

Here's the SOHO Cor 2 movie of the past 3 days. Let movie load and see all the CME activity.

Hi, Zack, I wish NINzrez or Tomasgod were here to unscramble all this data. Some of the geo-magnetic graphs are still a puzzle to me, lol. I'll just get as much info out there as possible and we can all figure it out together 'til NIN gets back. I found a NASA spaceweather tutorial, but I haven't gone thru it all yet.

[link to sunearthday.nasa.gov]

And I just tracked down the trusty old Magnetpause and Bow-Shock model.

[link to pixie.spasci.com]

NICT has a neato "desktop viewer"-click on that and it puts a spaceweather dashboard on your screen that updates every hour. It's pretty cool-there's links to all the data built-in. Check it out here:

Thank you Hugh. Even thought I have followed along this thread since March,...I have to tip my hat to you and the others who are bringing this information in real time to me/us.

I mean,...I vicariously feed off of your/everyone's sheer enthusiasm for the topic, but have no time to provide commentary that is not readily covered by the awesome Solar interpreters NIN has gathered together here.

I love how you and others are learning and giving it a go as well.

It's all good really.

Howdy, Tom! Glad you're here. What's happening when the GOES Hp levels get to ZERO ??

With these consecutive images I think you can see the Inner Magnetosphere Lines snap out and capture Energy from the Outer Shell and then re-coiling back with the Inner Magnetosphere loaded as a result..

Its' strange that the Velocity of the Solar Wind is relatively Low..There must have been a fair bit of Energy in this Event/s.

Yeah, I've never seen such a high storm level with this low SW velocity. I know there were several major CMEs, but none was directly in our face. This seems quite strong for a glancing blow. Here's the NOAA satellite environment plots:

Looks like the pressure's easing up a bit now. It's a good thing this sucker didn't hit us head on.

The geo-synchronus satellites have a little breathing room now.

[link to pixie.spasci.com]

Solar wind speed is now 492.5 km/sec and density is low at 0.3 protons/cubic cm

Aurora can be seen in the US as far south as Ohio.

i was going to post this, but wants to read through and see is anyone got it
and you hit it on the head :)
super fast winds and low density is about like low speed and high density
this was a glancing blow, so the main body of the CME did not hit
because of this the winds did not pic up to much
but there was a decent amount of density in this one, as we daw in all the stereo images
good thing this was not a direct hit
could have caused some major issues

Pretty good aurora visible here in southern ontario right now.....strange night... gusty winds, fast moving intermitant clouds, and jupiter alternating between casting an eerie glow through the clouds and brightening like a spot light in the clearings between the clouds.
Any one else been out to check for northern lights tonight....could be a good one its not even midnight here yet...

Chart wise it might seem pretty normal, but energy is getting through big time. I was reading and could slowly "feel it" coming in. I went to the charts and sure enough the magnetic wings were spread wide. The ear tones started fluctuating and the body tingle was incredible. I haven't felt a ground wave hit like this in a long while. The photon band at times increases this resonance, we are at prime influx right now and will be for quite awhile. Meditate and block your ego, if you are at this point the energy is wild
“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.” – Carl Sagan
