It's unusual for SDO and STEREO to be so far behind real-time. Hell, even SOHO got the drop on 'em this time. Maybe the Deep Space Communication network is busy with all those spy satellites or maybe they rented it out to the Chinese Space program, LOL. | Hugh M Eye User ID: 5591236 11/17/2011 10:15 PM ![]() Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The large CME seemed to come from another giant sunspot just over the east limb. Data has been extremely retarded today-STEREO A has been out of action more than 10 hours. STEREO B has begun updating but there's a gap of 7 hours. SOHO will post an image or two and then disappear for a few more hours. So bear with me as I try to sort things out. Oh, there's also been another CME on the backside. Here's some pretty pictures from SDO--zoom to the eastern equatorial zone. The images are from the middle of the Long Duration Event: [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] Very intense flaring and magnetic loops visible. [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] SDO's patented 3-wave blend...Mmmmm. [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] Poor recent image from STEREO B (sorry, not much to choose from) shows the BIG CME toward the lower right and the backside CME to the upper left. Some of this material may head to Earth after all, but it's difficult to tell from one photo. [link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov] Recent update from SOHO Cor 3 showing both CMEs: [link to sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov] Will search for more data/images...stay tuned. Old Sol's gotta rhythm going now. There was a small CME we missed earlier with all the data problems. I believe this was from that southern filament liftoff. This one may be Earth-directed--it's at 5 o'clock position on the SOHO Cor 2: [link to sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov] Same position much later on Cor 3: [link to sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov] SEEDS movie was made before SOHO updated the missing images. The small spot(s) near the eastern equator is AR11353 and the large, dangerous-looking region near the southeastern limb is AR11354. Coming up behind 1353 is a very active region which has been launching all the east-side CMEs. It's just now peeking over the limb and I can't wait to see this monster better. Let's jump the gun and call it 1355. [link to sidc.oma.be] [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] "There is more stupidity than hydrogen in the universe, and it has a longer shelf life." Thanks, Learner, nice find! I never knew this existed. It's not meant to be a real-time tool but it's in line with the research that the STEREO mission was designed to do The black gap is much smaller in the recent images as the STEREO craft move into better position for 360 degree coverage. | Hugh M Eye User ID: 5614954 11/18/2011 06:09 PM ![]() Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | CLUSTER MISSION REVEALS EARTH'S BOW SHOCK IS REMARKABLY THIN: The European Space Agency's Cluster mission data suggests that the bow shock formed by the solar wind as it encounters Earth's magnetic field measures only 17 kms across (about one-fifth of previous estimates). Cluster consists of 4 spacecraft flying in formation and measures spatial variations in temp. and other properties of particles in the plasma that surrounds Earth. Electrons undergo a dramatic and abrupt rise in temp. near this 17 km bow shock region. Such a sharp transition is close to the limit and could hardly be any steeper-and thin shocks are better accelerators. More at Space Daily: [link to www.spacedaily.com] ESA Cluster homepage: [link to sci.esa.int] For a good introduction to particle acceleration physics and the magnetosphere I highly recommend NASA's "Magneto Mini-Golf" video game.
