UPDATE 12/06/11:
There was another bright CME on the NW limb-not Earth-facing.
:cme1206:

The unpredictable sun which seemed to be increasing in both spots and flaring yesterday-has mysteriously pooped out and some spots are decaying rapidly. AR11361 is about to vanish over the NW limb; 1362 has weakened considerably since we first saw it: 1365 which mushroomed quickly is now disappearing: large active region 1363 has diminished slightly, but is still Earth-facing and capable of strong flares. 1364 is a single spot and appears stable.
The region 1368 in the SE was spotless-produced 3 C-flares-grew spots yesterday-now has decayed to almost nothing again. Between it and the big one is 1367 which seems stable. A new region in the NW has been numbered 1369. Why? I don't know-it looks to me like a small part of region 1366 which may be the only growing region on the disk.

SOLAR STORMS COULD "SANDBLAST" the MOON-NASA

Scientists at NASA Goddard, as part of the Dynamic Response of the Environment At the Moon (DREAM) project, have announced that CMEs can significantly erode the lunar surface according to new computer simulations. A strong CME may contain a billion tons of plasma moving at a million miles per hour in a cloud many times the size of Earth.

"The moon has just the barest wisp of an atmosphere, technically called an exosphere because it is so tenuous, which leaves it vulnerable to CME effects. The plasma from CMEs impacts the lunar surface, and atoms from the surface are ejected in a process called "sputtering."

"We found that when this massive cloud of plasma strikes the moon, it acts like a sandblaster and easily removes volatile material from the surface," said William Farrell, DREAM team lead at NASA Goddard. "The model predicts 100 to 200 tons of lunar material – the equivalent of 10 dump truck loads – could be stripped off the lunar surface during the typical 2-day passage of a CME."

This is the first time researchers have attempted to predict the effects of a CME on the moon. "Connecting various models together to mimic conditions during solar storms is a major goal of the DREAM project," says Farrell."

In 2013, NASA plans to launch the Lunar Atmosphere And Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE). The orbiter will try to measure the dust and test their predictions from 12-30 miles above the lunar surface. Wow, just in time for solar maximum! No wonder STEREO A is having debris knocked off of it-I wonder how Messenger is holding up at Mercury?

Sunspots and 10.7cm radio flux are up, but the solar magnetic Ap index crashes

This is strange. Usually we see the geomagnetic Ap Index increase with increasing sunspots and 10.7 cm radio flux. But the Ap index (the third graph below) has crashed to the third lowest level since January 2000, matching what it was a year ago. This is the second month of decline, and the decline is steep.

Nice find there, Nacht, thanks for posting. Of course the Ap Index is a local measurement of effects at Earth, not a true measure of solar output. Strangely, as we've seen lately, the largest flares and CMEs are rarely Earth-facing. I don't know if it's just good fortune or divine intervention. If it's the former, we may be in for a series of big jolts-as they say in Vegas, eventually the luck plane tilts the other way, lol.

Anyway, the American Geophysical Union (didn't know they were unionized) is meeting this week and space weather is definitely on the agenda. NOAA, NASA, etc. are once again warning about the potential solar effects on the power grids. They even put out a very attractive graphic. [link to www.nasa.gov]

Surprised no one has commented on this story. This is new info I haven't heard of before. This would seem to mean that any "moonbase" would have to be deep underground or at least heavily shielded. It also leads me to doubt stories about "glass domes" and lunar "cities". The moon having (almost) no magnetic field, no protective ozone layer, and an extremely thin exosphere is truly an inhospitable, harsh environment for humanoid activity.

CORRECTION: Flare was detected and recorded by GOES x-ray flux as a C2.7-however, as X-rays travel in a line-of-sight the actual discharge was probably more powerful; it was mostly occulted, from a region beyond the NE limb. I've only noticed those signature "trails" from very strong flares.

Significant precursor signal detected at 2320utc/1820est. Possible 6+.

Radio Direction Finder has signal coming in East of France from somewhere out in the Northern, Mid to Southern portions of the Pacific plate to Alaska, Canada and Chile.

All who live anywhere in the vicinity of this line trajectory should be wary next 5 hours. Have escape plan ready and seek open terrain in the event of felt tremor. Secure most of your heavy objects and belongings around your home.

Namaste, Hopefully I am wrong. Or it hits an unpopulated area.

P.S I am thinking possible 7+.

Howdy, Zack, good to see you around.cheers Things have been really strange on the sun lately. Two new regions numbered yesterday as 1368 & 1369 are now un-employed and have turned in their spots already. Taking their place are 3 new numbered regions:1370, 71, & 72. Formerly large region 1362 near the NW limb has decayed quickly and will soon be leaving us over the limb. Just to the north, active region 1365 looks to be still growing as it nears the limb also. 1364 also has grown and added a few companion spots. Here's the latest NOAA Summary:

Moving along-- the large southern active region 1363 has diminished greatly (GLP effect?), losing some of its trailing spots, and never living up to all the hype, lol. AR 1367 is small group of spots nearby looks very weak as does new region 1370 just above it. Back to the northern hemisphere--1166 seems stable and some small spots nearby have been numbered 1371 & 1372. Believe it or not there's other tiny spots popping up here and there but none are amounting to much. The new big spot coming over the SE limb and another soon to come over the north side gives us hope for some flare activity .

Re: SOLAR WATCH * 312 M & 25 X FLARES starting 3-7-2011 (Updated Daily)
Stupid question #37,2011:

If a large enough object where to strike the moon at the perfect angle and blah,blah...(I'm no scientist can you tell!) could it cause the moon to rotate?

Magnetic Effervescence
Dec 08, 2011

“Bubbles” of magnetic energy are said to surround the Sun’s heliosheath.

According to astronomer Merav Opher of Boston University’s Voyager team: “The Voyager probes appear to have entered a strange realm of frothy magnetic bubbles. This is very surprising.”

Voyager 1 encountered the heliosheath in December 2004, followed by Voyager 2 in August 2007. It was Voyager 1 that first detected fluctuations in the electron count as it traveled through the heliosphere, while Voyager 2 made similar observations later in 2008.

Since NASA’s computer model of the heliosphere works only if the readings are assumed to come from flying in and out of the aforementioned bubbles, some means for their creation had to be concocted. Enter stage left, the old tried and true, magnetic reconnection.

As a press release about the discovery states, the Sun’s “twisted and wrinkled” magnetic field lines far out in the heliosphere “bunch up,” causing them to “reconnect” and explosively “reorganize” into long, sausage-shaped bubbles of magnetism.............................

...............Although no specific data is yet forthcoming, Electric Universe scientists assume that plasma behaves in space the same way as it does in the laboratory. Armed with that insight, an electrically sensitive mind will see what otherwise remains invisible.

Thank you kindly Hugh. I am having some difficulty in keeping up with the sun activity do to limited net access of late.

I am still quite interested.

NiN started a great thing with this thread,...great gathering of fine folk.

I see she is AWOL for some reason.

cheers

Hey aether,...

Looks like I gotta find time to renew that thunderbolts info.

Tiny bubbles,...
