 Quoting: IwantToBelieve76

Hail, fellow suntards. Great work IWTB on the videos. I don't mean to nitpick but the lonely C1.2 flare was from 1376 to the north. [link to www.lmsal.com]
We should see more flaring soon as more active regions are popping up in the southern hemisphere and two more in the north should be rising over the limb in the next day or three. The region coming over the southeast limb (seen near that prominence in the video) looks to be producing some flares.
:2new:

More research and analysis needs to be done on the sun's strange zig-zag effect on the comet's tail.
:EUVI_B:

As noted on the Sungrazer update page, this behavior is still unexplained--

"This one is a short animation of four frames from the STEREO-B EUVI instrument at the 171-angstrom wavelength (corresponding to about 1.5million degrees, I believe). The comet is clearly visible racing away from the Sun, leaving a wiggly-tail in its wake! Why the wiggles? We're not sure -- we need to start studying that when we get all of the spacecraft data from STEREO-B this weekend. However, we think there may some kind of helical motion going on, or perhaps there's a projection affect and we're seeing tail material magnetically "clinging" to coronal loops and moving with them. There are other possibilities too, though, and we will certainly investigate those! We should have equivalent images from the STEREO-A spacecraft which we will also get this weekend. When we pair these together, and throw in the SDO images too, we should be able to get an incredibly unique 3-D picture of how this comet is reacting the the intense coronal heat and magnetic loops. We really are going to learn a lot here."

Excellent, IWTB! Now one more flare from 1376-C1.9--she's heating up. 1376/1377 region is directly Earth-facing for the next few days. We haven't had an M-flare for over a month so we're overdue for some strong activity.

Here's an SDO/Solarsoft movie of the C3.2:

Re: SOLAR WATCH * 312 M & 25 X FLARES starting 3-7-2011 (Updated Daily)
and now on to the terrestrial magfield report.

i remain confused with the HAARP magnetic data. Rescaling the time axis drastically changes the magnitude data. i can figure no reason except: they are re-normalizing for the time period. Just as in cosmic ray data, there is no true 'zero'. They pick some value and measure the variation around that: either calling it more or less than 100% or plus or minus 0%. same dif.
so with the HAARP data, i think they pick new 'zeros' for each time span. That's why the monthly chart shows such large deviations compared with the weekly or daily... or something.

in any case, i'm going with the monthly charts... and according to that, we are still doing some weirdness. As i said before on or very near 11.20 the earth rang hard and all the polarities shifted (by almost 1% of total field) and hung out there till roughly 12.2, where we rang again and shifted back to normal, but at a very high level..higher than normal anyway (this is only visible on the monthly chart BTW).

I've uploaded a composite image of three charts: HAARP mag field data, Russian cosmic ray data, and Oulu cosmic ray data.

here:

[link to www.bigupload.com]

a few things to notice:

-the magfield 'ringing' we felt on 12.2 is clearly reflected in both cosmic ray count (i've aligned the charts for easy viewing).

- ever since 12.2 our daily magfield 'rhythm' is back, but at much higher amplitudes.

-the cosmic ray count suddenly shows a very strong diurnal component up until 12.12 and then begins a rapis increase over the next coupla days... comet approaching?

- and finally, on 12.4 Mercury was between us and the sun

i have no idea what any of this means.

Something did indeed happen. On 12/4 they stopped the updated polar drift map on SolarIMG. They set it back to early Nov. I sent a message to the webmaster, and his reply was "they are being very hush, hush about it". They still haven't updated it.

It has been speculated here that the comet was larger than first measured....could it be just the opposite, smaller, so that the charge area would be smaller, thus equalizing charge to the sun before it got close.? If there was not much of a potential difference by the time it got to the sun, there would not be a dramatic discharge

Could the lack of any significant tail within the corona be due to the corona having a fairly constant charge distribution? So once the nucleus has equalised its charge then it remains equalised until it leaves?

Perhaps Comet Lovejoy was the benefactor of a COINCIDENCE? The sun has produced an incredible number of CMEs in the past month or more. Maybe its batteries were already discharged and the comets passing came at a fortuitous time when the magnetic fields were at a low ebb. Like sticking your finger in an electrical outlet during a blackout...nothing happens. Just a thought. The traditionalists use the coincidence theory all the time--why can't we?
