SOLAR ACTIVITY PICKS UP:
Dec. 25th began with a pair of magnetic filaments erupting in the sun's northern hemisphere followed by a sequence of C-flares from sunspot 1385 in the sun's southern hemisphere. Both halves of the sun are rocking on Christmas: SDO movie. Coronagraph images from SOHO and the twin STEREO probes suggest a possible Earth-directed CME. Stay tuned for updates

So after a mild 40 days we have 2 Earth-facing filament eruptions and another CME from a strong Earth-directed flare. Add some extra ooomph from the coronal hole and the possibility that all of this will arrive at Earth at nearly the same time....and DOOM ON! I guess the action sometimes happens in chaotic clumps.

Adjust your scorecards, suntards. USAF/NOAA Joint statement is now calling the M-flaring active region #1387.

:M1.5flare:

Joint USAF/NOAA Report of Solar and Geophysical Activity
SDF Number 359 Issued at 2200Z on 25 Dec 2011

IA. Analysis of Solar Active Regions and Activity from 24/2100Z
to 25/2100Z: Solar activity was moderate. New Region 1387 (S22W28)
produced a M4/1N flare at 25/1816Z. This event was accompanied by
Type II (1019 km/s) and Type IV radio emissions. This region grew
rapidly, ending the period as a Dao type group with Beta magnetic
characteristics. Coronagraph imagery was not yet available to
determine the characteristics of the CME. Earlier in the period, a
filament eruption occurred near N21W15. Analysis of this event
using LASCO imagery indicated a speed near 400 km/s. Evaluation of
the geoeffective potential of both the flare and filament eruption
is ongoing.

IB. Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be
moderate, with a chance for further M-class activity from Region
1387.

IIA. Geophysical Activity Summary 24/2100Z to 25/2100Z:
The geomagnetic field was quiet. An enhancement of the 10 MeV proton
flux at the ACE spacecraft was observed following the M4/1N flare
mentioned earlier.

IIB. Geophysical Activity Forecast: The geomagnetic field is
expected to be mosly quiet on Days 1 and 2 (26-27 December).
Initial predictions are for the CME to arrive late on Day 3 (28
December), bringing unsettled to active levels with a slight chance
for minor storm conditions at high latitudes. The arrival estimate
will be refined as new data becomes available.

HI all,

christmas activity for me now over :P

The location of the M4 solar flare yesterday (and C class flares) was region 1387. This region was numbered overnight. It's location is 22 degrees south and heliographic longitude of 225 degrees, (S22 Lo225)

Old region 1380 was located at S20 Lo232, which is very close to the new region 1387 which caused the confusion

SolarWatch--Flare Activity Region 1387 CloseUp--12/26/11

[link to www.youtube.com]

All of yesterdays C class flares and the M class flare originated from region 1387, for all this activity the group is small but looks magnetically complex. The group is a DAO type at 30 millionths

A M1 class solar flare peaked at 0227z this morning from region 1387

A new region is about to rotate into view over the south-east limb which over recent days had produced occasional solar flares

:stereobehindnews:
Image from Stereo Behind EUVI 195 shows you the incoming Region

Edit also SIDC Belgium reports now:

NOAA AR 11387 (no Catania number) is by far the most active region on the solar disk. In the last 24 h, it produced 2 M-flares in addition to 6 C-flares. Yesterday, at 18:16 UT this region was the source of an M4.0 flare. Linked to this event, a type IV radio burst and a proton flux enhancement in GOES data were observed. The associated type II radio burst had an estimated shock speed around 1000 km/s. A CME was observed by the STEREO/COR2 and SOHO/LASCO instruments in the south-west. We expect to receive at least a glancing blow from this CME, which can cause unsettled to active geomagnetic conditions starting from December 27 evening. For now, geomagnetic conditions are quiet. As the GOES background X-ray flux is at high B-level, we expect more C-flares in the coming days, with a possibility for another M-flare.

Which Came First?
Dec 26, 2011

Electric currents create magnetic fields in the Sun.

“Which came first, the chicken or the egg?” Asking this question always gets a chuckle from a group of kids who haven’t been asked that before. For adults, it confirms their conviction that unanswerable questions must be laughably ignored. For a farmer who gets into the egg business by purchasing a group of laying hens the answer is easy. “My chickens came first; that’s how I got my eggs.”

Solar astrophysicists who try to explain what causes coronal mass ejections (CMEs) have a similar conundrum: “Which came first, the change in electric current, or the change in the solar magnetic field?” Until the present day there has been no mention of electric currents in space by solar astronomers. There has been no acknowledgement whatever that electric current is needed to create magnetic fields or that it even exists.

In 1908 Kristian Birkeland suggested that electrical flows from the Sun caused the auroral displays that we see. Astronomers such as Sidney Chapman ridiculed him. When it came to descriptions of solar coronal mass ejections and similar phenomena, all we have heard about for decades was that magnetic fields move around and twist – their “magnetic lines of force” come together, touch, and then fly apart carrying matter with them. This is called “Magnetic Reconnection.” Solar astronomers never mention electric currents. We are to believe that magnetic fields do it all by themselves, without help......................

RUSSIAN MAN OK AS SATELLITE CRASHES THROUGH ROOF-

This crash marks the fifth failed space mission for Russia in 2011 so far

A Siberian man had a piece of a Russian satellite crash through his home after a system failure sent both the communication satellite and its rocket plummeting back to the Earth's surface.

Andrei Krivorukov, the homeowner, went out to his yard minutes before the crash to gather firewood. A fragment of a Meridian satellite then crashed through his roof while he remained outside unharmed.

Thanks for the vids, IWTB!
Wow, it's looking like a traffic jam of solar energetic particle ready to invade geo-space. I forget where I read it, but multiple CMEs produce particle collisions which intensify the geo-magnetic effects; so we may be in for a nice auroral display this week.

I'm puzzled as to the cause of this unusual 2-channel flare. That was huge-I'd guesstimate as big as 10 Earths! I didn't see any filaments near that area. Anyway, it seems the sun has finally got Earth in its sights; this CME was right at the central meridian and should be a dead-on hit to our magnetosphere.

Not to be argumentative, but I believe the C5 LDE was the result of the channel eruption not the cause.

[link to www.lmsal.com]

Yesterday we also had two CMEs (1 large, 1 small) from filament eruptions in the north which preceded the M-flares (though actually the CME was produced by the LDE C7.7 flare). So we have quite a bit of plasma heading our way along with the increased solar wind from the large coronal hole. Maybe the makings of a solar "perfect storm"? Some of the approaching plasma is visible on the STEREO HI 1 images (note:the bright object is Jupiter far in the background).

[link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov]

If 1384 wakes up and unleashes an M or an X-flare we could have the makings of a Carrington-type super-storm. As it stands now, we may see some satellites compromised by an onslaught of energetic solar particles. This could get very interesting.

Maybe it's just me, but does anyone see a sinister smiley-face in this SDO pic of regions 1387, 1380, & 1385???

The channel flare was the result of the long duration C5 flare from region 1384

yep, there is a filament near to 1384 or the channel eruption..a bit to the west but it looks stable for now

So we have the influence of the coronal hole as we know and this will cause some unsettled and active intervals on December 29-31, the partially Earth directed CME from the latest M Flare Region 1387 and the new CME from the channel eruption...this will be int

Re: SOLAR WATCH * 312 M & 25 X FLARES starting 3-7-2011 (Updated Daily)
The NOAA Enlil CME prediction model shows a more direct hit on Earth than the NASA streamer model. Looks like an aurora show is on for Wednesday evening in US, Canada, and S. America.

[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

Of course only one CME is seen in the model--I believe the other factors we've already noted will intensify the effects.
