nice to see you IWTB. Thanks for posting my favorite Star Trek still pic. lol

Looking at the magnetosphere simulator......I see it's taking a good hit right now.
I stayed up all night to see where the sun went. Then it dawned on me.

SDO hasn't updated for almost 6 hours. Unusual, though not unprecedented. I wonder if they're in a defensive mode from energetic solar particles? There was a filament liftoff in the NW close to the limb, but I doubt it will be geoeffective.

[link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov]

Solarsoft has been down today also.

[link to www.lmsal.com]

There was just a spike in density and temperature.

[link to www2.nict.go.jp]

So far the IMF charge has been favorable to Earth- however it may flip-flop several times before these disturbances subside. This magnetic storm could last for a few days.

Re: SOLAR WATCH * 312 M & 25 X FLARES starting 3-7-2011 (Updated Daily)
SIDC - RWC BELGIUM 28 Dec 2011, 1147UT

NOAA AR 11387 and 11388 (no Catania number) produced several C-flares in the past 24h. The most prominent flare yesterday was a C8.9 flare produced by NOAA AR 11386 (no Catania number) at 04:22 UT. This eruption was accompanied by a CME observed with the coronographs onboard both the STEREO and SOHO spacecrafts. A first estimate of its speed lies around 800 km/s. A glancing blow from this event is possible late on December 29th. We expect possible unsettled to active geomagnetic conditions later today and tomorrow due to the arrival of several CME's on December 25 and 26 and a high speed solar wind stream from a coronal hole. The first arrival signatures are currently visible in the ACE data. The solar wind speed is increasing but still low (<300 km/s) and total interplanetary magnetic field is climbing towards 15 nT. For now its southward component is still positive, so geomagnetic conditions are quiet at the moment.

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to minor storm on December 28-31 due to CME and coronal hole effects, occasional major storm intervals are possible...

Good Morning all,

Sunspot Today

New region region 1388 was numbered yesterday as a single spot group at 90 millionths in size

:region1388adec28:

:sunspottodaysdoi:
[link to s1220.photobucket.com]

There is though a more complex group rotating into view not that far behind 1388. This is a multi spot group

Altogether eight numbered groups are visible. Region 1386 and 1387 both increased in spot count and size and both retain their Beta-Gamma magnetic configuration

Numerous C class solar flares took place yesterday with four already this morning
