Thanks for the halpa.nso.edu link Hugh, didn't know that that one existed, bookmarked now..

My pleasure, J O G! I like the Earth-based GONG telescopes for watching filaments. Usually at least one of their scopes is updating every 1-5 minutes, so it's where I like to start to see what's going on. The space-based imagers are fantastic but take awhile to downlink the data.

Here's the link for the network:

SDO close-up (sorry it's B&W) of the first wave from 00:30 to 00:50.

[link to sdowww.lmsal.com]

And here's a color movie of the second wave at 01:35 to 01:48.

[link to sdowww.lmsal.com]

The third wave movie isn't ready yet.

thanks for adding those Hugh
im running through data, see no signs of a proton storm
the CME looks to be a bit to far Northwest to be geoeffective
but looking at some recent images, i might retract that in the morning
a bit to hard to tell just yet
we just might get a glancing blow
ill update in the morning as to what i find
its almost 3am here and im still getting over the flu
so im off for the night

Some beautiful images of the magnetic loops all lit up from that third wave of flaring. I think this is causing the LDE shape to the X-ray flux. Those are damn big loops! They may re-fire again too.

Hi, gogo! That scope is not online right now, only the one(s) with the green numbers are active. I think that last shot was taken as the sun went out of view or the dome was in the way. The GONG scopes are scattered around the globe so we can have 24-hour coverage of the sun, weather permitting.

Re: SOLAR WATCH * 312 M & 25 X FLARES starting 3-7-2011 (Updated Daily)
I have a question:

This is primarily directed to the lifer's/moderators here...
Hugh, Nin, Look'n, IWTB, etc.

What here would be considered a post of excess length?

The LDE thing has come to fascinate me so much that I downloaded the archive of X-ray plots from NOAA and have prepared two listings: One list all X-class events through the period and notes all LDE's evidently of duration greater than 9+ hrs. The second list is thematically identical to the first but includes the M-class of flares as well. The motivation for this exercise in monomania comes from having assembled the plots into a slideshow and having it as a background on the desktop running over and over. After having watched this more times than I'd care to count I'd swear that there's a pattern present relative to the onset and duration of just the category of LDE's themselves, it keeps prodding at my subconscious mind though I can't quite put my finger on it yet. Perhaps those here might stumble over what I can't quite arrive at...several dozen heads are exponentially better than one I'm sure.

To be sure, if this has already been posted here in compact form previously or exists elsewhere on the web I'd dismiss the notion of a posting out of hand, also if this wouldn't be of significant interest to those hereabouts. The first list is relatively compact at less than 200 lines (about)...the second is much longer obviously.

i luv this thread.

[link to www.bigupload.com]

and i feel that this last event has been really educational for me. actually observing the process is much different than examining data of past events: far more enlightening, imo.

obviously, much more observation, thought, and discussion remains before understanding arrives....

a coupla things i noticed :

CMEs tend to arrive in a 3 'half wave' impact, almost as if we pass through two transitions (leading and trailing edge) and a middle peak.

there appears to be a strong correlation (tho not always: annoyingly) between Bz flips and strong geofield 'ringing'.

absolute magnitude of flare that produces a CME is less important than duration: or more precisely, both magnitude and duration need to be considered when estimating the degree of interaction.

there appears to be at least some correlation between planetary locations and earth directed CMEs: need more data here to be sure.

the D-RAP chart might be a good metric for a 'charged' earth.

a coupla burning questions:

while the IMF polarity (Bz red or green) seems to affect Gaia's field strongly during some periods, other times, almost not all. Where is the missing variable(s?) that determines the degree of interaction?

is it all pure physics or is there some 'information processing' going on? does/can She choose? it seems quite reasonable to me that the biosphere can process information: choose different actions based on similar stimulus.

or something.

i hope to have some post processing to share with y'all in a coupla days.

there is a new sunspot on the Northeast limb that is starting to rotate in Earths direction today
there is a CME that was produced from this region a few minutes ago
not earth directed
but maybe a sign of things to come this week

SIDC Forecast Bulletin for today:

SIDC SOLAR BULLETIN 26 Jan 2012, 1232UT
SIDC FORECAST (valid from 1230UT, 26 Jan 2012 until 28 Jan 2012)
SOLAR FLARES : Active (M-class flares expected, probability >= 50%)
GEOMAGNETISM : Active conditions expected (A>=20 or K=4)
SOLAR PROTONS : Proton event in progress (>10 MeV)
PREDICTIONS FOR 26 Jan 2012 10CM FLUX: 125 / AP: 006
PREDICTIONS FOR 27 Jan 2012 10CM FLUX: 121 / AP: 020
PREDICTIONS FOR 28 Jan 2012 10CM FLUX: 121 / AP: 011
COMMENT: Solar activity is expected to be active with risks of M class
flares from NOAA AR 1402. It produced a series of C class flares on Jan.
26, including a long duration event (C6.4, 0542UT peak time),
accompanied with a partial halo CME observed on both COR2 coronagraphs
on STEREO and with LASCO onboard SOHO. This event is not expected to
trigger any significant geomagnetic disturbance. Geomagnetic activity is
expected to be active by the end of Jan. 27 due to a coronal hole
becoming geoeffective. Current solar wind conditions are quiet.
