Re: SOLAR WATCH * 312 M & 25 X FLARES starting 3-7-2011 (Updated Daily)
Another large filament has erupted, this time in the NE quadrant. A chunk of it lifted off north and has produced a CME. What's really strange is the southernmost piece seems to have moved many thousands of kilometers towards disk-center. This eruption may still be in progress.

SOHO Cor 2 image of most recent CME:

Big Bear Observatory shows the mysterious movements of the filament.

So far as I can tell none of these CMEs are Earth-directed, but this may change if the center-disk filament flies off of the Sun. Stay tuned....

The first and last seemed to be fired northward, but the middle one came from the left of stereo ahead, which I thought was more likely to be earth directed.

I haven't found much on any of these however.

The sun does seem to be acting a bit weird with all this activity but a flat x-ray flux.

These three still H-alpha pics show the metamorphosis of the filament in the NE over a 12-hour period.

At first, it seems like a fat blob and then it stretches out--more than doubling in length. Most of the original blob lifts off producing CME; however, the stretched-out part seems to snap around almost to mid-disk. How stable this filament is now, we'll just have to wait and see.

As I expected!

Thank you for the Links..the Last One: [link to halpha.nso.edu]

Tip your Screen back and you will notice that the Large Filament on the Bottom-Left of the Disc has now joined with all the others running up the Middle to the Filaments at the Top Left!

Incredible!

There must be some seriously powerful stored Magnetic Fields within that Lower Filament for it to have now drawn in all the others on the Left of the Disc!

Sheesh!?

I'm wondering what this will bring from summer on as our magnetic pull is stretched out due to our lineup with the dirty road of the milky way. Actually i'm very interested to see what will occur in march with some notable allignments. I think this intersyellar cloud is a catalyst!. You know the commercial for basf, this would be one for the sun. We don't make the solar anomaly we make it more cataclysmic! I guess we'll see

Are these a risk for Hyder flares? Because unlike the massive filament from a couple months ago, the U shaped one is on the front of the sun towards us, rather than snaking over the NW limb.

The latest H-alpha image shows both the NW remnant and the part that slithered toward center-disk have both vanished. Compare this pic w/ the third image link above.

We may see another CME on the STEREO cor 2 images. So far the major eruption is pointed well north of the ecliptic.

A major active region should soon be appearing over the northeast limb, hopefully bringing us more activity in the X-ray flux.

this will be happening more and more as magnetic fields become unstable
this happens as solar max arrives
at solar max the north and south magnetic fields of the sun reverse (as most of you already know^^)
so we need to keep this in mind when looking at magnetics on the sun
there will be more and more magnetic charges we see in the coming times!
it is amazing to be able to watch this with SDO!

we also need to remember that SDO is fairly NEW
it was not around at the last solar max in 2001-2003
so many of the images we get to see on SDO are new to not only us, but also the solar community in a whole

This filament eruption covered a huge piece of solar real estate! We're fortunate these CMEs aren't directed at Earth; as they look extremely large and energetic. The most recent SDO composite images show huge, gaping scar-like tracks left by the filament's eruption.

The secondary "destabilzation" eruption may be partially Earth-directed.

STEREO B image:

[link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov]

In a related subject...WTF is up with STEREO Ahead? Data has been reduced to a trickle for the past few days.

I don't have the software or the know-how to make custom videos, but I trust most folks here can make use of the movie-making features of the NASA websites for SOHO, SDO, & STEREO. I urge folks to give it a try, because there's been a lot of jaw-dropping shit happening on SDO tonight (and to a lesser degree SOHO).

 Quoting: Starwind

Filaments can remain stable for weeks and large ones like that one in the southern hemisphere would probably come off in several chunks. It would be mind-boggling if it erupted all at once. We'll have to keep an eye on it, though.

More on Filaments:

[link to solar.physics.montana.edu]

Sorry I didn't get to answer your question on Hyder flares. Hyder flares or two-ribbon channel flares can sometimes be caused by filament channel eruptions. They'll usually produce a spike in the X-ray flux and are visible in the H-alpha images. There's no way of predicting when they will occur.

More on Hyder flares:

[link to www.ips.gov.au]

The new coronal hole may be a temporary result of the tsunami eruption. As NIN said, we'll have to wait for the dust to clear to analyze the results of all this. If it remains open we'll see a high-speed solar wind stream in about 3 or 4 days.

Goodnight all.

SIDC Daily Bulletin--

The CME was first seen in LASCO C2 at 3:42 UT. It is a full halo CME (including the shock) and is expected to be geoeffective. The CME is nicely visible in COR2-B data as well where we derived a speed of around 500 km/s. SDO/AIA images show that this CME is the result from a large filament located in the north-eastern hemisphere, that erupted late on the 23rd. Dimmings and nice
post-eruptive loops are visible. We expect geomagnetic active to minor
storm conditions on Monday 27/2 when the arrival of the CME is expected.

Re: SOLAR WATCH * 312 M & 25 X FLARES starting 3-7-2011 (Updated Daily)
Significant earthquake precursor signal detected on 02/24/12 at 1740utc/1240est. Possible 6+.

Radio Direction Finder has signal coming in East of France from somewhere out in the Northern, Mid to Southern portions of the Pacific plate to Alaska, Canada and Chile.

All who live anywhere in the vicinity of this line trajectory should be wary next 5 hours. Have escape plan ready and seek open terrain in the event of felt tremor. Secure most of your heavy objects and belongings around your home.

Namaste,

Hopefully I am wrong. Or it hits an unpopulated area.
Japan is also a likely target. Be wary.

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who in the name of charity and good will shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers! And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee!" Will most likely be very close to a 7 magnitude quake.

The chasm resulting from the filament eruption is HUGE!

[link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov]

The glowing walls of the canyon are formed in a process closely related to that of arcade loops, which appear after many solar flares. Stretching more than 400,000 km from end to end, the structure traces the original channel where the filament was suspended by magnetic forces above the stellar surface.

Excellent post HUGH
“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.” – Carl Sagan

well, this is nifty
SDO stopped updating today around 06:00 UTC
right now it is 18:59 UTC

so we are unable to see the end result of this latest filament eruption and the condition of the solar surface after this event
