I don't see anything ominous in it but I noticed an interesting configuration in the NICT simulation earlier today. I just thought it was curious-looking...like a wall of magnetism. Unfortunately, the wall is built behind the Earth instead of in front, LOL.

They use a massive computer to decipher ACE data and the computer simulates what the magnetic field and lines are doing.

The lines are imaginary, but its a nifty and sophisticated computer model. I think it helps a great deal to visualize stuff than to pour over boring lists of data and confusing graphs. The Japanese super-computer generates the simulation from real-time solar wind and IMF data from ACE (which is approx. 1 million miles in the sun's direction). Someone please correct me if there's other data being fed into it (such as Cluster. THEMIS, etc.). The GOES satellites monitor near-earth conditions from geosynchronus orbit (usually from inside the magnetosphere).

Nice, I like the red filter. Keep in mind the image is inverted (upside-down). That's why the GONG network has to correct each scope for N-S, E-W consistency.

Looks the "new region" (not-so-new anymore, LOL) I'm calling 1427 is rapidly sprouting some spots east of 1423.

[link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov]

Also, the great under-achiever 1416 is due to return in the SE maybe tomorrow. You can already see some of its coronal loops in the latest AIA-171a image.

[link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov]

It would be nice to see some activity in both hemispheres again.

your welcome mamahf

Joint USAF/NOAA Report of Solar and Geophysical Activity
SDF Number 061 Issued at 2200Z on 01 Mar 2012

Analysis of Solar Active Regions and Activity from 29/2100Z
to 01/2100Z:
Solar activity has been low. There was one C-class
flare duing the past 24 hours, a C3/1f from Region 1423 (N17W21) at
01/1526Z. New Region 1427 (N15W01) was numbered today. A CME was
observed at 29/1824Z (using LASCO C2) from the north polar region of
the sun, however it is not expected to be geoeffective.

Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be very
low to low.

Geophysical Activity Summary 29/2100Z to 01/2100Z:
The geomagnetic field has been quiet to active with isolated storm
periods at high latitudes. The elevated activity appears to be
related to a solar sector boundary crossing.

Geophysical Activity Forecast: The geomagnetic field is
expected to be quiet to unsettled for the first and second days
(02-03 Mar) due to a small yet well positioned coronal hole. A
return to quiet levels is expected on the third day (04 Mar).
[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

:solarsectormarch:
The geomagnetic field is currently being affected by a solar sector boundary crossing What is it?

As the solar wind flows away from the Sun, the IMF is carried with it and has a spiral shape. Along the ecliptic plane, the IMF generally has 2 or 4 sectors per solar rotation (27 days) where it is pointed toward or away from the Sun. The surface separating the polarities is called the heliospheric current sheet. A sector boundary crossing occurs when the polarity of the IMF reverses. A well defined sector boundary crossing has a uniform field direction for about 4 days before and after the crossing

“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.” – Carl Sagan

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 11752975

I wouldn't be too worried about the interstellar G-cloud in this lifetime, but there's actually very little known about the space between the stars. We can be fairly certain it's not having any effect on Earth's magnetosphere at this juncture.

"Interstellar Cloudlets in the Sun Vicinity

The distribution and shape of the interstellar clouds can be deduced from absorption lines in the spectra of nearby stars. We are in a group of small and tenuous clouds, and that the Sun will exit from the one of those clouds, the local cloud, in less than 2000 years, and later enter a neighbouring cloud."

[link to sci.esa.int]

More about the G-cloud and the interstellar medium:

[link to jila.colorado.edu]

Actually, an interstellar exploration foundation has been established by some NASA scientists in their spare time. It's website is Centauri Dreams, and they want to propose missions to Alpha Centauri, the G-cloud, and even exo-solar planets. We're talking immense distances and time-scales here.
