If this SS doesn't pop off a X5+, I am going to be both surprised and shocked. Five M flares and 1 X in 24 hours? Pretty entertaining.

Hi NiNzrez, I think it would be beneficial if you grabbed those 3 images, put them in photoshop or something side by side, divide the sun up into its regions and highlight the + / - poles in each sunspot region just to give us all a visual representation. I see what your trying to say and it makes some sense but without a clear image of before and after I and im sure other people, am finding it a little hard to follow just by looking at white and black regions. Wouldn't each photo being shot at a different angle skew what we are looking at ?

As we get closer to maximum, the sunspots will start appearing closer to the suns equator. We are a little ways off I would say,but this cycle by no means is going to disappoint

AR1429 is going to give us one. Sol was quiet for the past couple weeks. Then, BAM! He is poppin off all kinds of flares. Doesnt look good, and there is an even bigger sun spot about to turn the corner if Im not mistaken.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 4526619

Interesting article from 2001:

NASA:The Sun Does A Flip-

"Meridional flows on the Sun's surface carry magnetic fields from mid-latitude sunspots to the Sun's poles," explains Hathaway. "The poles end up flipping because these flows transport south-pointing magnetic flux to the north magnetic pole, and north-pointing flux to the south magnetic pole." The dipole field steadily weakens as oppositely-directed flux accumulates at the Sun's poles until, at the height of solar maximum, the magnetic poles change polarity and begin to grow in a new direction.

Woo-hoo! How many is that now ...7 or 8? And to think that for days last week there was only one lonely C4 flare. We had a lot of filament eruptions to watch though. Look at the X-ray flux at Solarsoft from left to right. One big spot made quite a difference! Scroll down to the flare list; 37 of the last 40 flares were from 1429!

To the point, try look at sunspot genesis [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] that's 1429 on the far north east.

And take a close look [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov]

Sunspots are a convoluted mess of magnetic field lines for the most part and the magnetogram only has the ability to see the surface, but basically, for 1429 the polarity is the same as the rest in the northern, it's just been so twisted over the days that it appears at a quick glance to be the alternate polarity.

look close you can see the 'white' on the left on it, look earlier in it's life and you can more clearly see the 'white' on the left.

Further note, If the magnetic poles had shifted you would see massive uprising in the 'normal' polarity sunspots, and that sunspot would actually be extremely calm for it's size.

I know this is probably a stupid question to pose but hell I'm brave and you guys are so nice....Why do they renumber the sunspots when they come back around? It seems it would be easier to track the bad boys if the number stayed the same.
