Anonymous Coward User ID: 12018235 United States 03/06/2012 04:24 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | As seen from the Earth, a solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, and the Moon fully or partially blocks the Sun. This can happen only during a new moon, when the Sun and the Moon are in conjunction as seen from Earth. In a total eclipse, the disk of the Sun is fully obscured by the Moon. In partial and annular eclipses only part of the Sun is obscured. At least two, and up to five, solar eclipses occur each year; no more than two can be total eclipses. Total solar eclipses are nevertheless rare at any particular location because totality exists only along a narrow path on the Earth's surface traced by the Moon's shadow or umbra. An eclipse is a natural phenomenon. Nevertheless, in ancient times, and in some cultures today, solar eclipses have been attributed to supernatural causes or regarded as bad omens. A total solar eclipse can be frightening to people who are unaware of their astronomical explanation, as the Sun seems to disappear during the day and the sky darkens in a matter of minutes. As it is dangerous to look directly at the Sun, observers should use special eye protection or indirect viewing techniques. People referred to as eclipse chasers or umbraphiles will travel to remote locations to observe or witness predicted central solar eclipses |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 12018235 United States 03/06/2012 04:36 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | A NASA spacecraft has captured footage of Tuesday's partial solar eclipse. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) captured images of the new Moon crossing part of the Sun's face in a partial eclipse that was visible only from space. Space.com reports that SDO snapped a video and photos of the solar eclipse which made the Sun look like a "huge celestial Pac-Man," from a position 22,000 miles (36,000 kilometers) above the Earth. According to SDO , "The video shows today's Lunar Eclipse in a variety of wavelengths the AIA instrument observes. Each wavelength shows us a different temperature and layer of the Sun, allowing us to study the Sun and its activities." SDO officials tweeted a message on the mission's mascot Twitter account, @Camilla_SDO: "It's a PacMan sun! The moon is transiting between @NASA_SDO and the sun today!" The incident, according to SDO officials, caused a dip in EVE (extreme ultraviolet) output and gave scientists opportunity to calibrate the energy emitted by the active sunspot region AR1422 that has been emitting strong ultraviolet radiation into space. The AR1422 region was blocked in the Moon's passage across the face of the Sun. An eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and the Sun. A total eclipse occurs when there is an exact alignment between the Moon and the Sun as viewed from the Earth. When the alignment is not exact, we have a partial eclipse. Space.com reports a total eclipse will take place on November 13, but will be visible only from parts of northern Australia and the South Pacific. A partial eclipse will occur on May 20 and will be visible in much of Asia, the Pacific and western North America, says NASA. [link to digitaljournal.com] |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 12018211 No, it's the spring eclipse season for many satellites. Satellite TV providers have put out notices and so has NOAA for their GOES weather satellites.-- KOZ (KEEP OUT ZONE) / ECLIPSE The GOES satellites encounter two periods, during the year, which the satellites are in the Earth's shadow. Known as the Eclipse season, these periods require the spacecraft to be totally dependent on onboard batteries for a maximum of 72 minutes daily. Eclipse's occur from about February 28 - April 11 and August 31 - October 13. The Imager and Sounder instruments are powered down to conserve power, until the daily eclipse is over. There is a significant risk of the sun light directly entering the scanners, as the spacecraft enters and leaves the Earth's shadow, requiring the Imager and Sounder to be idle prior to and following eclipse. This is known as the "Keep Out Zone". [link to www.ospo.noaa.gov] |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 12018211 sure seems like it. that video was apparently only half the eclipse which started at 07:02 and ended at 07:24. That video I posted only shows half of it. The eclipse actually goes backwards at the 07:13 mark. Very strange just like the last one IMO edit to add: here's the link starting at 07:02. [link to helioviewer.org] if you set the time step to 1 minute and step though it, you can see the entire progression.. Last Edited by RTS REDUX on 03/06/2012 05:22 AM |

It's an Earth eclipse; don't forget, in geosynchronous orbit there are eclipses not seen from the ground. As you can see, EVE had its own eclipse a few hours earlier. (x-rays=top purple line) [link to lasp.colorado.edu] We missed one flare...looks like a C9 approximately. There is another CME seen by STEREO A & B. Doesn't look as big as the last one, but its probably more Earth-directed. Hard to say right now as SOHO is on vacation again. I'd like to see us get through the incoming CMEs before we add more to the mix. PS~ Flat lining in C territory isn't comforting me. Yeah hanging out in C class may be the norm for awhile, we are on an upward swing still.Lets see what the day brings! “One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.” – Carl Sagan |
