Was estimated (by me) between a M5 and X1 before it croaked. No no no! That is the DRAP chart for radio frequency absorbtion affected by protons in the ionosphere. It is saturated because we are having a SEP (Solar Energetic Particle)event with a PCA (polar cap absorbtion). Additional Solar flares are going to light it up because the ionosphere is already saturated. Here, I wrote an article on this earlier this morning. I just remember reading a post from IWTB stating that eclipse season was beginning Yes the satellites have been getting eclipsed. The good thing about GOES 13 is that it is able to operate during eclipse periods. And for that I am truly thankful because we had a lot of missed solar flares prior to GOES 12 replacement when it was eclipsed for several hours at a time during eclipse seasons. GOES-13 has resumed imaging/sounding and will switch back to the East schedule between 1941 and 2041 UTC on 3/31/10. --Original Notification-- ***GOES-13 is scheduled to replace GOES-12 as the GOES-East operational spacecraft on April 14, 2010 at 1934 UTC*** GOES-13, launched on May 24, 2006, is the first in the series of GOES-N satellites (GOES-14 was launched on June 27, 2009 and GOES-P is scheduled to be launched no earlier than March 4, 2010). This series will carry the 5 channel imager and 19 channel sounder similar to the GOES-I through M series, with some differences. GOES-13 carries the same imager and sounder payload as GOES-12, but the new spacecraft bus will allow it to operate through eclipse and most of the keep out zoneperiods and images will have increased navigation, registration and radiometric accuracy. [link to www.ssd.noaa.gov] :) That would solve a few problems! :D Actually the x flux comes from GOES 15 but the same goes for it. Here is the data for the improvements with it when it replaced the older models. GOES-15 Improvements In general, GOES-13/14/15 are in the same 'class' (previously called GOES- N/O/P), but they are improved over the current operational GOES (11/12) series. In particular, changes implemented with GOES-14 and GOES-15 compared to previous GOES Imagers includes the following: The spatial resolution of the 13.3 µm band (band-6) was improved from 8km to 4km, by incorporating two detectors instead of just one. (That change in the 13.3 µm band (band-6) necessitated a change in the GVAR (GOES VARiable) data format, by including another block for data from the additional detector.) Ability to operate the instruments during the eclipse (sun behind the earth) periods and Keep-Out-Zone (sun possibly within instrument view) periods by utilizing batteries and partial-image frames. _______ Blog [link to mysolaralerts.blogspot.com] YouTube Channel [link to www.youtube.com] "Give me Liberty, or give me Death!"
