We are due for one in the next twelve hours and the one from todays LDE after that. We typically don't know their effects until they hit and that seems to be based on a number of variables we don't quite understand. At this point I don't think anybody knows if we will get one strong hit and one mediocre hit, or two devastating impacts or none at all since the planet reacts differently on a case by case basis to each particular hit. I'm not sure if I'm worried about these two CMEs, they aren't quite back to back and the speed of the second isn't quite as high to give someone an immediate "oh fuck" reaction, carrington was something like 2,400kms+ supposedly. Ok thanks :) I sure hope the lack of the "oh fuck!" factor really is a good sign lol haha we all do say that to ourselvs a lot and have many times over this last week haha^^ we just try hard to contain ourselvs and not let our emotional sides control our thinking about whats going on and what will happen. wow! what an intence solar week we have had! Yes it has been a helluva week..suntards dream..lol...i just wish they would keep all the simlations running during these heavier storms so we arent in the dark and jumping all over the place looking for updated information.....it just makes ya go hmmmmm when they pull that shit...guess we have to work with what we got....and we got a helluva team on this thread doing a great job.... |

| Hugh M Eye User ID: 12306182 03/10/2012 11:40 PM ![]() Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Empirical Model for Prediction.... (snip) 3. Storm Prediction Model [25] Although the above comparisons suggest general dependencies of geomagnetic storm strength on CME parameters, no single CME parameter is found to signifi- cantly correlate with geomagnetic storm strength. This implies that a geomagnetic storm cannot be predicted by any single CME parameter, but depends on all of these para- meters in a more complicated way. We thus propose a model in which the geomagnetic storm strength (Dst in nT) depends on four major parameters . | Hugh M Eye User ID: 12306182 03/10/2012 11:50 PM ![]() Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Spatial Relationships Between Solar Flares and Coronal Mass Ejections (2008) A typical CME consists of a bright frontal structure (leading edge), followed by a dark cavity, and a bright core. This configuration is called the CME three-part structure (Illing & Hundhausen 1985; Webb 1988). The bright core corresponds to the erupting filament (Webb & Hundhausen 1987; Gopalswamy et al. 2003a). There is an issue of whether or not narrow CMEs have the three-part structure (e.g., Gilbert et al. 2001), but at least for large CMEs, this structure is fundamental. In this paper we refer to the three-part structure as the main CME body. Some CMEs possess a faint envelope outside of the main CME body. The envelope might be a shock wave driven by the CME (Sheeley et al. 2000; Vourlidas et al. 2003; Ciaravella et al. 2005); thus there is a problem of whether or not the envelope is a part of the CMEs (see St. Cyr 2005). However, since there is no established way to identify a shock by coronagraph observation itself, we have included the envelope structures as a part of the CME and refer to all the CME features as the whole CME.
