Re: SOLAR WATCH * 312 M & 25 X FLARES starting 3-7-2011 (Updated Daily)
just a few hours into the xray flux being back in business and we have a
"registered" M1.0 flare from a new region in the far southeast limb

who knows how many we have missed while the monitor was down :/
 Quoting: NiNzrez

Yeah Nin you're right it definitely looked like we were dropping out of a decent flare when it came back on.
 Quoting: shadasonic

Howdy, folks. I had a feeling this new region was gonna be jumpin'. Oh, we haven't missed any significant flares. As I posted yesterday, the purple line on the EVE Diodes plot is roughly equivalent to the GOES red-line flux (not as nice, but we can keep an eye on things). Nothing bigger than B-flares during the GOES outage. The EVE Diodes plot can be found at the EVE Spaceweather page and also at the bottom of the SDO Sun Now page. I only wish we had a better back-up for the ACE data.

Thanks Hugh, forgot about EVE

 Quoting: Isis One

swpc announced that it would come back online today around 16:00 UTC so this was expected
but, it started working again right when it looks like a drop from a larger flare

Not sure what is happenening and what to make out of it........

Well I hope you see some, personally I have a hard time look'n up into the night sky for fear of actually seeing one ... but .... that's another story. hf

Not so nice here today, but for the month of March, and awesome 61*. I'm really concerned about my fully budded fruit trees. Next week we are due for lows in the mid 20's. Fingers crossed, I'm really looking forward to my first crop of apples, and my first attempts to making an awesome peach liquor :)

morning everyone :)

the gap in the xray flux today may have had a M in there
and there was a Type II radio emission
issue time was 11:02 UTC
what i find interesting, is there is no Xray event at 11:02 on the Xray flux we are looking at
at 11:02 the Xray flux was at around a B4 level
the gap where a larger flare may have been, is in the 08:30 - 09:30 area
and according to stereo A no earth directed CME that i can see

ALERT: Type II Radio Emission
Begin Time: 2012 Mar 24 0845 UTC
Estimated Velocity: 587 km/s
Description: Type II emissions occur in association with eruptions on the sun and typically indicate a coronal mass ejection is associated with a flare event.

but i just got on here looking into this mornings events
so i will search around a bit more to see whats going on :)

Re: SOLAR WATCH * 312 M & 25 X FLARES starting 3-7-2011 (Updated Daily)
Found an interesting article in the Maui News entitled SUN'S IMPACT ON EARTH INCLUDES UNCERTAINTY-

Sunspots can break out even when the sun is presumably in a less active stage of the cycle. An X-9 class flare broke out on Dec. 5, 2006, during the solar minimum, reportedly disrupting communications satellites temporarily – but also proving to be anomalous. NASA said later the burst was a stream of hydrogen atoms that theoretically should not survive the coronal explosion, raising more questions about the physics of the sun.

While sunspot activity will continue, Hawaii solar physicist Jeff Kuhn says the current solar cycle is mostly demonstrating what astronomers don't know, even with more data than ever from an assortment of instruments on Earth and in orbiting observatories launched over the past two decades.

“This cycle, we've done the worst and our understanding of the solar cycle is sorely lacking,” he says. “This cycle is more than a factor of 2 smaller than we first thought – and long delayed, by two years, from when it should have come.”

Judging by the immense physical size of this flare and the slow decline of the X-ray flux, the chance for a CME here is very good.

Re: SOLAR WATCH * 312 M & 25 X FLARES starting 3-7-2011 (Updated Daily)
More than 50 new papers are being presented this week on the planet Mercury and the discoveries of the NASA MESSENGER spacecraft. It's hard for me to keep up with all this info at this time.

"About 20 years ago, astronomers discovered that the poles of Mercury "light up" when illuminated with radar beams from giant ground-based antennas. As implausible as it seems, they concluded that the radar-bright patches might be due to water ice. I am not making this up! These "snowballs in hell" are just barely conceivable because Mercury's axial tilt is very nearly 0°, so the floors of many polar craters remain permanently shadowed from the Sun's searing light.

Messenger's cameras can't see the darkened crater interiors, but the spacecraft carries a neutron spectrometer that can tell if the deposits are water ice. The details are a little thorny, but when cosmic rays strike Mercury's surface, atoms in the rocks emit neutrons — and if a neutron collides with a light atom (like hydrogen) before escaping to space, it will lose energy. If Messenger spots enough of these "slow" neutrons coming from near Mercury's north pole, water ice is the only likely cause."

[link to www.skyandtelescope.com]

"A Surprising Core
MESSENGER's radio tracking has allowed the scientific team to develop the first precise model of Mercury's gravity field which, when combined with topographic data and the planet's spin state, sheds light on the planet's internal structure, the thickness of its crust, the size and state of its core, and its tectonic and thermal history.

Mercury's core occupies a large fraction of the planet, about 85% of the planetary radius, even larger than previous estimates. Because of the planet's small size, at one time many scientists thought the interior should have cooled to the point that the core would be solid.

However, subtle dynamical motions measured from Earth-based radar, combined with MESSENGER's newly measured parameters of the gravity field and the characteristics of Mercury's internal magnetic field that signify an active core dynamo, indicate that the planet's core is at least partially liquid."
