I can see(or not, rather)a dark blob on the EVE Image at the Mid-South-Eastern edge of the Disc..is that actually there or is it just due to there being less Energy surrounding the area?

My pleasure.

Some of the action we're seeing today might be due to elevated X-ray levels. The 0.5 - 4.0 A range increased to their current levels around 10:00 and haven't dropped back down as the usually do... a bunch of small ones popping off perhaps.

The 1 Minute Data is showing pretty low level X-Ray Action..quite smooth at around B3 at 1.0 > A since 13:00 on here: [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

Though there has just been a small dip which could indicate a larger Flare may be in the offerings(Imo).

I'm more expecting CME and Prominence events from the Filaments in the North-West as CH 509 approches the area of interest: [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov]

Is mankind doomed to be a prisoner of Earth forever? In addition to bone loss, radiation poisoning, and blurred eyeballs; insanity may also be a space travel hazard.

"As the United States considers a manned mission to Mars by the mid-2030s, ongoing research is beginning to raise doubts about the ability of human astronauts to survive such a multi-year journey in zero gravity without severe and possibly permanent physical or psychological damage.

One of the most pressing concerns, researchers say, would be the effect on their vision, as acceleration on launch followed by long exposure to weightlessness has been shown to change the shape of astronaut eyeballs, swell the optic nerves and cause blurred vision -- problems that have been found to persist long after return to Earth and normal gravity

NASA releases first batch of blurry, lo-res, b&w GRAIL MoonKam photos. This will be a boon to UFO-hunters and Moonbase theorizers! I'm a bit perplexed that we have such fantastic pics of Iapetus and Dione (from the Saturn family) yet we get cell-phone quality pics of our Luna....hard to believe (insert NASA face-palm here).

More on GRAIL Mission from JPL:

"As the GRAIL twins fly over areas of greater and lesser gravity at 3,600 mph (5,800 kilometers per hour), surface features such as mountains and craters, and masses hidden beneath the lunar surface, can influence the distance between the two spacecraft ever so slightly.

How slight a distance change can be measured by the science instrument beaming invisible microwaves back and forth between Ebb and Flow?

How about one-tenth of one micron? Another way to put it is that the GRAIL twins can detect a change in their position down to one half of a human hair (0.000004 inches, or 0.00001 centimeters). For those of you who are hematologists or vampires (we are not judging here), any change in separation between the two twins greater than one half of a red corpuscle will be duly noted aboard the spacecraft's memory chips for later downlinking to Earth. Working together, Ebb and Flow will make these measurements while flying over the entirety of the lunar surface.

This begs the question, why would scientists care about a change of distance between two spacecraft as infinitesimal as half a red corpuscle a quarter million miles from Earth?"

Anyone from JPL care to explain why such a super-fine orbital calibration and ultra-poor photography?

Hi, Shenue, I posted pics of it last night. There is some dispute about the origins however...either a filament eruption in the NE or a far-side flare from 1429.

Another CME recently from the southwestern limb.

Perpetual Ocean

This visualization shows ocean surface currents around the world during the period from June 2005 through Decmeber 2007. The goal was to use ocean flow data to create a simple, visceral experience.

This visualization was produced using NASA/JPL's computational model called Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean, Phase II or ECCO2.. ECCO2 is high resolution model of the global ocean and sea-ice. ECCO2 attempts to model the oceans and sea ice to increasingly accurate resolutions that begin to resolve ocean eddies and other narrow-current systems which transport heat and carbon in the oceans. The ECCO2 model simulates ocean flows at all depths, but only surface flows are used in this visualization. The dark patterns under the ocean represent the undersea bathymetry. Topographic land exaggeration is 20x and bathymetric exaggeration is 40x.

This visualization was created as a last minute entry for theSIGGRAPH 2011 computer animation festival; however, it was not accepted.

Re: SOLAR WATCH * 312 M & 25 X FLARES starting 3-7-2011 (Updated Daily)
A solar sector boundary crossing( polarity of the IMF reverses) indicated by ACE data has been responsible for the unsettled geomagnetic field. A high latitude Aurora Watch will be in effect over the next 24-48 hours. A favorably positioned negative polarity coronal hole is expected to continue to keep our geomagnetic field unsettled through March 29, 2011 UTC. Old Sunspot Region 1429 is expected to return to the solar disk midday on March 29th which should increase M-class flare probabilities.

[link to mysolaralerts.blogspot.com]

What is a Solar Sector Boundary Crossing?

As the solar wind flows away
from the Sun, the IMF is carried with it and
has a spiral shape. Along the ecliptic plane,
the IMF generally has 2 or 4 sectors per solar
rotation (27 d) where it is pointed toward or
away from the Sun. The surface separating the
polarities is called the heliospheric current
sheet. A sector boundary crossing occurs
when the polarity of the IMF reverses. A well defined
sector boundary crossing has a uniform field direction for about 4 days before and after the crossing.
[link to www.reeve.com]

When we have very large CMEs that blast off from the solar disk, even though they may not have been Earth directed as we saw this past week, they often cause these Solar Sector Boundary Crossings, and that is what we are seeing now.
