here's some great footage from the last eruption April 16

Stunning!

The Solar Optical Telescope on NASA/JAXA's Hinode spacecraft observed the April 16, 2012 M1.7-class solar flare from Active Region 1461 over the eastern limb of the Sun

After the eruption blobs of plasma are falling back to the surface of the Sun. Coronal rain has long been a mystery and thanks to spacecrafts like Hinode and SDO, this phenomena can be studied in much more detail

Coronal cavity still in NW, not spherical yet. Awwww..look the the sun paying tribute to Dicovery retiring. Resembles shuttle nose cone a wee bit.

Another C 1.3 flare, this time from AR1460 in the north. A few hours ago we had one from AR1459, so several regions are actively flaring today.

ION WAVES IN EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE: Today, a volley of C-class solar flares sent waves of ionization rippling through the atmosphere high over Europe. Dave Gradwell of Birr, Ireland, detected the disturbances using a VLF radio monitoring system.

Weird one. My eight year old just told me Neptune isn't a planet anymore? Said they saw a movie in school where Neptune and Pluto(the other non-planet) switch places for a little while. What gives? Truth or more government education? In Georgia if that helps...

Science talked about this yep

Don't worry, though, Pluto is now to be known as a dwarf planet, so it's not been completely ejected from our solar system, just relabeled

As The Planetary Society explains, "a "planet" is now defined as a celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, and (c) has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit.

A dwarf planet, according to the new definition, is a celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, (c) has not cleared the neighborhood around its orbit, and (d) is not a satellite.

So is Neptune a Planet?:

I was a bit shocked watching the news today. Channel 3 news reported the Chabot Space and Science Center held a Pluto memorial this weekend since Pluto was stripped of its title of planet (a fun idea); in addition, it was reported that Neptune could be next.

This is the first I have heard of this...

So why is there a rumor that Neptune could also loose its status as a planet? I have no idea why, perhaps over-reaction.

Thats very interesting, about venus
“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.” – Carl Sagan

SAY IT AIN'T SO DEPT.-

I think we may have missed another Earth-directed CME. There's a 5-hr gap in data from STEREO A and SOHO from approx. 16:00-21:00 utc. The image following the gap shows a CME plasma flow on STEREO A:

[link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov]

We had the 2 C5 flares from AR1463 somewhere in this time-frame and the SOHO difference movie seems to show a halo of material flowing our way. We'll have to wait and see if the missing data is filled in later.

SOHO C2 difference movie:

Thanks IWTB! As an old fart(39.75...not 40 yet) Pluto will always be number 9. But this Neptune thing kinda stunned me. Personally I think NOAA/NASA should understand our planet (it is still a planet I hope) before downgrading our celestial neighbors. LOL

The Lyrid Meteor Shower this weekend!

"Lyrid meteors come from Comet Thatcher. Every year in late April Earth passes through a stream of debris from the old comet, which has been bringing Lyrid meteors to our planet for at least 2600 years. Specks of Thatcher’s dust hit the top of atmosphere at 110,000 mph and disintegrate in a flurry of meteors. Most years, the shower produces about 15 to 20 Lyrids per hour.

This is a good year to look for Lyrids because the Moon will be new when the shower peaks. Dark skies favor sightings both from Earth and from Earth orbit"

Don't worry, Neptune is safe for now. Neptune is four times bigger than Earth and 17 times more massive. It's the third most massive planet (behind Juptier and Saturn) although it's slightly smaller than Uranus size-wise. This is from a 5th grade home-schooling site:

[link to www.enchantedlearning.com]

Pluto was downgraded because of its puny size not because of distance. I think the confusion is because it was discovered that Pluto's orbit does bring it in closer than Neptune from time to time. Several other planetoids, dwarf planets, or Kuiper Belt Objects(KBOs) have been discovered and some of those are larger than Pluto. If we find lots more (which we will) kids would have to remember the names of maybe 300 planets! So they decided to just call the big ones planets. Of course, if Pluto was as close to us as Mars or Venus we wouldn't dare demote it. It's just a mess of perspective, scientific consensus, and arbitrary rule-making. I guess that's why astronomer's have so many conferences, hehe.
