I believe according to this, the Solar North Polar Field has flipped, as of May 22.

you're right. the 3 m-flares we saw over the weekend were all impulsive, short-duration events. 1504 is gonna rival 1429 at this rate

starting to subside, down to about a c6 level. i'd be willing to go out on a short limb and say we will be seeing more activity from this ar in the coming hours/days

Just posted....
[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]
Space Weather Message Code: ALTTP4
Serial Number: 374
Issue Time: 2012 Jun 13 1416 UTC

ALERT: Type IV Radio Emission
Begin Time: 2012 Jun 13 1325 UTC
Description: Type IV emissions occur in association with major eruptions on the sun and are typically associated with strong coronal mass ejections and solar radiation storms.

Space Weather Message Code: SUM10R
Serial Number: 543
Issue Time: 2012 Jun 13 1416 UTC

SUMMARY: 10cm Radio Burst
Begin Time: 2012 Jun 13 1332 UTC
Maximum Time: 2012 Jun 13 1343 UTC
End Time: 2012 Jun 13 1347 UTC
Duration: 15 minutes
Peak Flux: 260 sfu
Latest Penticton Noon Flux: 141 sfu
Description: A 10cm radio burst indicates that the electromagnetic burst associated with a solar flare at the 10cm wavelength was double or greater than the initial 10cm radio background. This can be indicative of significant radio noise in association with a solar flare. This noise is generally short-lived but can cause interference for sensitive receivers including radar, GPS, and satellite communications.

Re: SOLAR WATCH * M2.4 Solar Flare July 14 2017! Earth directed CME (Updated Daily)
Two good articles....
What is the solar cycle?
Full article is here: [link to starchild.gsfc.nasa.gov]
snip
Sunspots do not appear everywhere on the Sun. They are usually concentrated in two bands, about 15 - 20 degrees wide in latitude, that go around the Sun on either side of the solar equator. The average latitude of those bands varies with the solar cycle. Just after the minimum of the solar cycle, sunspots appear at an average latitude of about 25 - 30 degrees (both north and south of the equator). As the solar cycle progresses, newer sunspots appear closer and closer to the equator. The last sunspots of the solar cycle appear at an average latitude of about 5 - 10 degrees. During all parts of the solar cycle, sunspots are almost never found at latitudes greater than about 70 degrees.

Space Weather: Sunspots, Solar Flares & Coronal Mass Ejections
Full article is here: [link to www.space.com]
snip
It takes approximately 11 years for the sun to move through the solar cycle that is defined by an increasing and then decreasing number of sunspots. As it reaches the close of a cycle, new sunspots appear near the equator, while a new cycle produces sunspots in higher latitudes. The cycles overlap; sunspots from the previous cycle can still develop even after sunspots from the new cycle appear. So solar scientists have a very difficult time saying exactly when one cycle ends and the next begins. cool2

I'd like to say I've seen every kind of CME in the past year, but actually they're all unique. It has been a long time since we've seen an event like this from the southern hemisphere. It will be several hours (maybe 24) before we get the SOHO images and the CACTus diagnostics which tell us the exact direction, size and velocity. Earth will be impacted, I'm certain of this. Hopefully we'll see some nice aurora in the lower 48 states here. We may see some power outages, too, but it's to soon to entertain the SOLAR DOOM scenarios. We have to be patient and wait for the data to trickle in. Lockheed hasn't even listed the M-flare yet.

Sorry for re-posting the spaceweather alerts, I just woke up and didn't see your post. Thanks for being on top of things. I didn't get to read the article cited, but I noticed that 1504, 1505, &1507 all appeared at different latitudes. I think this contributes to the magnetic instability we see in the south.
