We're gonna get a long proton ride out of this one!
“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.” – Carl Sagan

I posted earlier about my belief that there must be a mechanism in place to protect earth based on the behavior of SS when earth facing versus when not. So much for that theory (credit GLP effect if you please) because this bitch looks like a fast ball towards our blue marble.

No Carrington event (thank __________) but pretty impressive nonetheless.

Typically (and please correct me if I'm wrong), doesn't the line on the x-ray flux drop a bit faster following an X?

It's a long duration event. If you check out Nin's list on page one of this thread, you'll see they can go as long as 8 or 9 hours

This was a long duration flare. If you look on google images at screenshots of other long duration flares on the flux chart you'll see they take a long time to slowly drop back down.

Okay, I am on track, just wanted to make sure there. No Carrington but we have a grid that has been running full speed for about a month with record highs, not sure that won't effect things.

As NASA has stated in the past, theres no sure way to tell the strength of a geomagnetic storm until it's about to hit. I believe a couple pages back someone quoted NASA at as little as 20 minutes prior.
