here is a good one

Coming solar storm not likely to affect power grid
"Scientists said it will be a minor event, and they have notified power grid operators, airlines and other potentially affected parties.

"We don't see any ill effects to any systems," said forecaster Joe Kunches at the U.S. Space Weather Prediction Center in Colorado"
[link to www.cbc.ca]

usually they always have stories of the risk, not ones about there being no issue
 Quoting: NiNzrez

This is BS .... why not take the warnings and alerts down on space weather then ??

[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

Something tells me this may be more worrisome than they want known.
 Quoting: TS66

seeeeee NOW your thinking like me
when i see with all the other big events this solar cycle them blasting on the MSM about how it could take down the grids, i got a good feeling that the events we were about to see would not do much
now we have this X flare (the highest kind) flare while in a direct earth facing shot, AND blast out a large CME right at us

We then get conflicting reports on if its earth directed or not, then they change that and say yes it is, but then give conflicting reports on how bad it will be
and what do we see in the MSM?
how were going to be just fine, all is ok, look up at the pretty pretty lights

pshhh it IS BS!

Joint USAF/NOAA Report of Solar and Geophysical Activity
SDF Number 195 Issued at 2200Z on 13 Jul 2012

IA. Analysis of Solar Active Regions and Activity from 12/2100Z
to 13/2100Z: Solar activity has been at low levels for the past 24
hours. Region 1521 (S21W34) has been the most active region,
producing multiple low-level C-class events. Region 1520 (S16W23)
has decayed in area but remains the most magnetically complex region
on the disk, still classified as a beta-gamma-delta. The other four
numbered active sunspot regions have remained quiet and rather
stable. A CME was observed in LASCO C2 imagery at 13/0224Z. After
analysis, the CME was determined to not be geoeffective.

IB. Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be at
low to moderate levels for the next three days (14-16 July), as
Regions 1520 and 1521 continue to evolve and rotate toward the west
limb.

IIA. Geophysical Activity Summary 12/2100Z to 13/2100Z:
The geomagnetic field has been at quiet levels for the past 24 hours.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached
high levels during the period.

IIB. Geophysical Activity Forecast: The geomagnetic field is
expected to be at quiet to minor storm levels with a slight chance
for isolated periods at major storm levels on day one (14 July), due
the arrival of the 12 July CME. Unsettled to active levels with a
chance for minor storm periods are expected on day two (15 July), as
effects of the CME continue. A return to predominantly quiet levels
is expected on day three (16 July).

III. Event Probabilities 14 Jul-16 Jul
Class M 70/70/70
Class X 20/20/20
Proton 99/99/50
PCAF red

IV. Penticton 10.7 cm Flux
Observed 13 Jul 147
Predicted 14 Jul-16 Jul 145/135/125
90 Day Mean 13 Jul 128

V. Geomagnetic A Indices
Observed Afr/Ap 12 Jul 011/014
Estimated Afr/Ap 13 Jul 003/003
Predicted Afr/Ap 14 Jul-16 Jul 017/034-014/018-004/005

VI. Geomagnetic Activity Probabilities 14 Jul-16 Jul

fact of the matter is, when that one CME does hit that will be the new age carrington event, the electric will go out right around the same time us suntards are expecting the CME arrival
and right before it hits, we will be sitting here, looking at data, talking about "when is it going to hit? oh look solar wind is picking up! Look at the density increase!"
then BAM.. lights out
and each of us will be sitting in front of our PCs, with the electric out, thinking to ourselves (and some screaming it out loud) "omg that was the one!"

Untill that very moment arrives, when were sitting in the dark with no electric, it is ALL a guessing game!

we can only look at data and images and take our best educated guess as to the speed the CME will be at when it arrives at earth, and we can only guess at how much of the mass will hit, and how compact it will be at the time it arrives

Being aware of solar events is the best thing anyone can do with the Solar max on it's way
Then at least when that day comes, when the lights go out, when you knew that CME was suposto arrive, you will know why
when 98% of the world will not
and while everyone else is stepping outside wondering "why did the electric go out?!", you will know why and be able to act, while they stand in the dark looking at the pretty auroras in the sky

Helioviewer is probably getting a mix of processed and unprocessed C3 imagery. They take out the constant background so new CMEs are more visible I believe. The background glow they are removing here is from the big guy. Same time stamps, at least at this moment...

Unprocessed from nrl.navy ...

Also, haven't used helioviewer much but they seem to lag behind both SDO and C2,C3 direct sites fairly often.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 13079166

I use Helioviewer daily and I've never seen that "background glow" before

imo it's highly unusual especially since it's appearance coincided with the so called M-flare CME which is visible on SOHO from 03:00-05:00 +

As most of you know, the strange blobs seen on the SOHO images are little bits of insulation flaking off and are temporarily caught in the imager's field-of-view. We've seen this type of debris many times. Official explanation here:

Being aware of solar events is the best thing anyone can do with the Solar max on it's way
Then at least when that day comes, when the lights go out, when you knew that CME was suposto arrive, you will know why
when 98% of the world will not
and while everyone else is stepping outside wondering "why did the electric go out?!", you will know why and be able to act, while they stand in the dark looking at the pretty auroras in the sky

Wouldn't there be an extreme radiation storm that would kill the satellites even before we got a chance to see the CME?

Solarham says to monitor ACE, as it will have the first data on the incoming CME, does anyone have that site handy to post?
Nevermind da ha- it's the site Nin just gave me, LOL at myself!

This is BS .... why not take the warnings and alerts down on space weather then ??

Something tells me this may be more worrisome than they want known.

seeeeee NOW your thinking like me
when i see with all the other big events this solar cycle them blasting on the MSM about how it could take down the grids, i got a good feeling that the events we were about to see would not do much
now we have this X flare (the highest kind) flare while in a direct earth facing shot, AND blast out a large CME right at us

We then get conflicting reports on if its earth directed or not, then they change that and say yes it is, but then give conflicting reports on how bad it will be
and what do we see in the MSM?
how were going to be just fine, all is ok, look up at the pretty pretty lights

pshhh it IS BS!

One TV report I saw was quoting NOAA, the storm will make pretty lights and interfere w/ some satelLites, and maybe jets planes, but very ho-hum about it, like not much effect at all.

Re: SOLAR WATCH * 312 M & 25 X FLARES starting 3-7-2011 (Updated Daily)
fact of the matter is, when that one CME does hit that will be the new age carrington event, the electric will go out right around the same time us suntards are expecting the CME arrival
and right before it hits, we will be sitting here, looking at data, talking about "when is it going to hit? oh look solar wind is picking up!

I've noticed that the last several large flares we've had have been all over MSM, this one I've heard nothing? My workers phones have been down all afternoon- AT&T,it rings once then says good bye, they aren't sure what the problem is(AT&T that is)!

thanks for reporting this :)

My husbands Verizon has been messing up since 9 PM EST last night (his business phone). Rings a couple times, starts the message then goes to a busy signal.

Needless to say, he has a couple of frustrated customers. One took 3 attempts before getting through.

October 24, 2011 auroras were seen in southern Colorado and even in NM. Guessing that if it is seen in Mexico, then that might means lights out. [link to www.denverpost.com]

Loved Nin's post - we just won't know how bad it is until it happens. For those who HATE surprises, that isn't going to make us feel better.

here is a good one

Coming solar storm not likely to affect power grid
"Scientists said it will be a minor event, and they have notified power grid operators, airlines and other potentially affected parties.

"We don't see any ill effects to any systems," said forecaster Joe Kunches at the U.S. Space Weather Prediction Center in Colorado"
[link to www.cbc.ca]

usually they always have stories of the risk, not ones about there being no issue

Makes sense, if they put the public spotlight on ones they think will fizzle, then the public will get the notion that nothing ever comes of these and will tune out the warnings.

Of course when they actually suspect serious repercussions from an event, they will cover it up for "national security" and to "avoid panic".
And always, he fought the temptation to choose a clear, safe course, warning: "That path leads ever down into stagnation."
