I saw what was going on with the Sun today, but had no time to start a thread on it. I haven't had time to read over all pages but skimmed through.

NOAA is saying ....the M flare that was produced by Region 11166 has our eye, because it launched a Coronal Mass Ejection towards Earth at the same time. We'll have more on that later. [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

It looks to me like Region 1165 is ready to throw a large CME as well, although I think that it has rotated far eneough towards the western limb to be non geoeffective when it does.

NiNzrez, how much longer till we reach solar maximum ?

I mean the peak of the solar cycle when we're supposed to get peppered with X class flares...

Called "Ring of Fire", because of the volcanoes that surround the pacific rim, and it's living up to it's name as they are all starting to go off.

It's all wacky

The area that is now represented by light blue was bright red, when it was over N, and S America around noon today

it was red over the Pacific Ocean just before it hit hawaii.
now it looks strange because the poles are blue.. is that normal?

NASA has stated that they believe it will be in 2012
but im leaning in the direction of this year

I have never seen it represented the way it is right now. Very strange!

The chatter that I have heard from scientist recently is that it won't peak untill 2013, or even 2014. If this is the start, then we may be in for a really bumpy ride.

A CME that comes from that region will be almost a direct earth facing blow

Things can happen other than at the exact day, hour, and minute that solar cycle 24 reaches it's peak.

Professor at Ga. Tech told me at anytime now, TSHF.

It sent out an Earth directed CME earier today. So I am sure that as it rotates even more in line with us over the next couple of days, any of the CMEs from 1166 will have a high probability of being Earth directed.

1166's little sister 1169 is coming around too. Maybe they'll get together for a little fireworks.

Solar Update - As reported above, several M-Class flares (7) took place during the day on Monday. Sunspot 1165 which is located in the southern hemisphere is in the process of rotating onto the western limb and will soon be out of direct earth view. Sunspot 1164 which is in the northern hemisphere will also rotate onto the western limb soon after 1165. The chances for strong solar flares will decrease somewhat once these regions are out of view, however there will remain the possibility for further flares around Sunspot 1166. Just to the east of 1166, Sunspot 1169 did show some minor growth during the day on Monday.

Thats a good bet, but we can only assume. I want to know if the magnetosphere has anything to do with it?
