BRIGHT CME: NASA twin STEREO spacecraft observed a spectacular coronal mass ejection launched from the vicinity of decaying sunspot 1176 on April 3rd around 0500 UT. The blast was not Earth directed. Nevertheless, there is a slim chance that it deliver a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field on or about April 6th.

The discussion ends with a scientist who claims that "magnetic re-connection" has been proven and posts links to 29 papers. But has it really been proven in "laboratory, space, and solar plasmas"?

That is, by far, the biggest CME I've ever seen. Can only imagine what the impact might have been had it been earth directed.

Bright CME - In the Sunday STEREO COR Behind and Ahead images, a bright CME is seen billowing away from the Sun. Unfortunatly, this appears to be a limb event and not earth directed.

seems like the "experts" are saying the spray can was pointed low and to the right, I think Tuesday night we will get a G2 at least, that was a big ejection and at least partially pointed our way..

An eruption occurred in the vicinity of NOAA AR 1178 and plage 1176 early on April 3rd, with typical post-flare loop arcades. A CME was observed by the COR2 coronagraph onboard Stereo A spacecraft. Due the location of this event close the limb, we expect little, if any, geomagnetic effects

That 1176 just won't die, will it?

that last cme was the last of what we should get from it, at least pointed our way. 1166(1176) and 1169 have been quite a ride tho..

The CME is still coming..

IA. Analysis of Solar Active Regions and Activity from 02/2100Z to 03/2100Z: Solar activity was low. Region 1183 (N17W25) produced a C1 event at 03/0519Z. A CME was associated with a B8/Sf event from Region 1173 (S18W86) at 02/2347Z. At 03/0024Z, Goes-15 SXI imagery detected material movement from the SW limb that was later observed
in STEREO-B COR2 imagery at 03/0109Z and STEREO-A COR2 imagery at 03/0409Z. Using this imagery, a preliminary plane-of-sky speed estimate of 322 km/s was assigned.

IB. Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be very low to low with a slight chance for moderate activity (isolated M-class) from Region 1183 during the period (04 - 06 April).

IIA. Geophysical Activity Summary 02/2100Z to 03/2100Z:
The geomagnetic field was at unsettled to active levels in response to a coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS). The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels during the period.

IIB. Geophysical Activity Forecast: Geomagnetic activity is expected to be mostly quiet for the next three days (04 - 06 April).

The CME mentioned above is not expected to be geoeffective.


so we have mixed reports at this point..

This one will be more likely to stir up some geomagnetic activity for us.

As you can see from these Stereo images the back side of the disk is about to throw off a
CME as well.

the Flare was a C1 that lasted around 10hrs
a CME was produced from the same region on the sun
a Flare and a CME are not the same

A solar Flare is produced by a sunspot explosion and reaches Earth very fast, in around 8 minutes.
The levels of Flare strength are A, B, C, M and X (in order of weakest to strongest).

A CME (coronal mass ejection) may or may not be produced by the sunspot explosion. If it does produce a CME, it takes anywhere from 2 to 3 days to reach Earth, and sometimes even longer

A CME can be produced without a Flare
A Flare can occur without a CME
If a CME is produced after a Flare, the Flare size does not determine the amount of mass that is ejected in the CME
With the last X flare we had that produced a CME, the CME did not have much mass to it considering how big the Flare was

LDE's are rare
yet we have had 3 since 3/7/2011

this is the CME from yesterday close up

I have been following this thread from day one and a great big kudo's to all the knowledgeable peeps chippin in the information and keeping it dumbed down for the slower half of the population. (ME)

Moving on.... Nin.... What does the Ionospheric Delay represent? Is it- How much solar "stuff" is being allowed through the magnetosphere and effecting the "crust, magma, ???? on the Earth, which in turn has the potential to accelerate weather and plate movement?.. WOW that was a mess. Hopefully I got my point across.......
