Bubbling Plasma

Enceladus joins other celestial objects that produce "magnetic bubbles."

In a recent Picture of the Day, the so-called "bubbles" of magnetism supposedly found by the Voyager spacecraft at the boundary where the Sun's heliosphere meets the ISM (interstellar medium) were explained as Langmuir sheaths, or electrically charged double layers in plasma. Since the bubbles are thought to be elongated, it was suggested that the electron flux variations detected by the twin Voyagers probably indicate filaments of electricity called Birkeland currents.

Similar electromagnetic structures are seen around Earth, on Venus, on the various gas giant planets, and within and surrounding galaxies. All of these phenomena share a common characteristic: they are all manifestations of electricity flowing through plasma.

"Bubbles" of magnetic energy are said to surround the Sun's heliosheath.

Voyager 1 encountered the heliosheath in December 2004, followed by Voyager 2 in August 2007. It was Voyager 1 that first detected fluctuations in the electron count as it traveled through the heliosphere, while Voyager 2 made similar observations later in 2008.

Since NASA's computer model of the heliosphere works only if the readings are assumed to come from flying in and out of the aforementioned bubbles, some means for their creation had to be concocted. Enter stage left, the old tried and true, magnetic reconnection

Solar Update - Solar activity has been fairly low with the odd C-Class flare taking place. Both sunspots 1234 and 1236 remain decent sunspot clusters and there is a small chance of an M-Class event. A new region has rotated into view on the eastern limb, but is mostly spotless.

Disappearing Sunspots - There have been lots of chatter this week about the new predictions that are out showing the possible "hibernation" of sunspots starting in Cycle 25. There have been many predictions over the years including some that stated Cycle 24 would be one of the largest cycles on record. Obviously that is not panning out. I believe the best thing to do is to get through Cycle 24 first and see just how weak this cycle is before jumping ahead. Below are a few news stories regarding this topic.

1237 is fully rotated in earths direction as of June 16th
i would watch this sunspot group for something large as well

I thought they were predicting a dud for the solar cycle peak??
