Why? As noted earlier, Most of the CME went Upwards. Very little was directed horizontally toward Earth, that ISWA loop can't show you what this video does;

Earthquakes are firing today..alot of high 4`s and low 5`s

SOLSTICE SOLAR FLARE: The first day of northern summer began with a solar flare. Magnetic fields above sunspot complex 1236 erupted during the early hours of June 21st, hurling a coronal mass ejection (CME) almost directly toward Earth.  The incoming CME does not appear to be particularly potent; nevertheless, the cloud could trigger polar geomagnetic storms when it reaches Earth on or about June 23rd. Ok, please excuse my 'L' plates, I know this has been answered before, however I have some trouble with my memory and I really cant search 150+ pages for the answer :(

So tell me if i have got this right.. Solar Flares are quick and come fast and powerful and they are what knock out power grids etc right? These are like a huge solar EMP right? ..very little warning & here within mins or hours? The big X class flares are what we really cant protect or prepare against right?

CME's are slower, they take a few days to get here, dont fry electrics but can cause geo magnetic storms, earthquakes and weather anomolies..

If anyone can add any other effects I would appreciate it.

a lot of that cme went North but a lot didn't, we will get a hit on the 24th..

any alignments to combine with this threat Nin? the crust is just waiting for some reason to crack, and then another..

Hi EW, looks like you have most of it, but..

the effects on the Msphere and ionosphere are still unpredictable for many solar events. ie, a cme can cause instant disturbances to the Msphere depending on its location on the disk, and a flare can disturb the ionosphere which disturbs the earth's electric fields for days..
there are so many unique events we (humans) are just seeing for the first time this cycle. many are just now viewable thx to the new sats, but many solartards would say that this sc24 is different in many ways than has ever happened. it seems different from my observations..

Todays activity consisted of a long-duration C7 X-ray event which began at 0122Z, reached maximum at 0325Z and ended at 0427Z. The X-ray event was associated with a Sf flare from Region 1236 (N17W21) as well as the eruption of a 17 degree filament near N39W01. Also associated with this activity was a symmetric halo CME which first entered the SOHO C2 crononagraph field of view at 0316Z and had an estimated plane of sky speed of about 640 km/s.

According to a recent press release, an immense eruption on the Sun encompassed almost an entire hemisphere. The extraordinary plasma discharge prompted this response from Karel Schrijver of Lockheed Martin's Solar and Astrophysics Lab in Palo Alto, California: "The August 1st event really opened our eyes. We see that solar storms can be global events, playing out on scales we scarcely imagined before."

The massive coronal mass ejection (CME) demonstrated that solar explosions are interconnected by magnetic fields reaching out for thousands of miles. The Great Eruption (as it was called) was composed of several smaller components: solar flares, filaments, and CMEs that spanned 180 degrees of solar longitude and lasted for 28 hours.

CMEs typically spew plasma in the billions of tons throughout the Solar System. A signature of CME ejections is an increase in auroral brightness and frequency on Earth. The ejections are composed of charged particles, and are attracted to and follow Earth's polar magnetic cusps. A few CMEs have been observed to leave the Sun with unexpected acceleration: velocities more than 70,000 kilometers per second have been clocked.
