Waiting for updates to see if there was a CME associated...

M6.0 Solar Flare: Reported here first, A Moderate Solar Flare reaching M6.0 took place around Sunspot 1261 at 13:47 UTC Wednesday and appears to be long in duration. A brief R2 Radio Blackout resulted. I do expect a decent Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) to be associated

Let's see if there is a large quake after the X-Flare comes ;-) 2 days after the last X-Flare we had a 9.0 in Japan.

I wonder what is in store for us this time??

M6-CLASS SOLAR FLARE: Earth orbiting satellites have just detected a significant M6-class solar flare. The source appears to be sunspot 1261. Increased energetic proton fluxes are possible in the vicinity of Earth. Stay tuned for updates.

Looks like you guys have been keeping an eye on things while I was away! Wow, a really good sized CME with this 6.0 M flare. Region 1261 had rotated a little more off towards the western limb but should still be geoeffective.
This CME also has a much larger spread pattern.

A "tsunami" (so to speak)is coming and the surf has sucked far out...

Have you seen these earthquakes in Iceland?, all above mag 3. These are happening in one spot under the sea.

Could this be the start of the flare we had?

we have 2 CME's headed out way, and a few others that i have counted that are not being reported on. although they are smaller, i count around 7 of them and they were super fast low mass. CMEs will he hitting us starting later on the 4th and continue through the 3th-6th as of right now. if any others occure, this will change

right now the xray flux is rising a tad and acting very erratic, like it has before the last few Ms, so a big flare might be in the makeing right now.

Minor update added at 17:20 UTC: The main magnetic delta structure in region 11261 has very strong gradients with the opposite polarity umbrae hard to separate visually. The CME produced earlier today was full halo and could reach Earth on August 5.

A major proton event is possible from 1261, Region 11263 developed further and has a complex trailing penumbra with 2 magnetic delta structures

I dont mean to sound suntarded, which I am to a degree (Interesting enough when you consider it makes up the majority of the mass in our solar system, and I pride myself on obscure knowledge) Anyway, my question is, if a flare erupts while Earth facing, does it continue to be Earth facing until arrival? Curious as to how that works, as it takes several days to travel to us..

flare or CME?
a flare is radiated light that arrives in 8 min, and yes continues earth facing
travels much like a aimed flashlight does int he dark

With a CME, since a CME is mass (particles) it can come up against something in space that could alter it's route, slow it down etc.
but for the most part, if it is earth directed, it will remain earth directed until time of impact

So, it effectively travels at the same speed as our rotation through space?

the fact that earth is so tiny compared to the sun,
it takes the earth a whole year to rotate around the sun 1 time (i know you know this, we all know this^^)
our movement in space is slow in comparison
that, if we are in the same proximity of the solar surface, as where the CME came from, we really do not move far from that same spot in a 2-3 day time period
and CME's can move super fast, depending on ejection force

now if the angel of the CME is as such that it goes off a bit to the opposite direction of earths rotation around the sun, and it is slower, then it might look to be earth directed at the time of the CME, but due to all the variables, it gives us a glancing blow
these last 2 CMEs were direct on

i'm using this as an example to show how earths movement through space is not very notable when compared to the vastness of the solar surface and any CME that is ejected in the region of proximity

makes sense when you state it that way...off topic, have you ever went to the outer limits in Mt. Morris? I had a burger there the other night before the Dash...and does every gas station in your state sell liqour?

it was ok, good food, kind of a biker bar, but nice people (at least that night) I had traveled for six hours, so any cooked food was good. As far as the liqour goes, our state cannot sell full proof liqour, only state stores can...I did buy a pint of Jhonny Walker for later, so I guess they got me...(You cant buy pints of JW in Ohio, at least that I know of....)

So the question I have, and maybe one we all kind of wonder Ninz is...when do you think we will have the next carrington event?

I know it is a little sick, and just shows the destructive side of our nature...but am I the only one kind of looking forward to it? Dont get me wrong, I love technology sometimes, but to be free of the whole rat race? To survive by ones wits alone? Awesome...

We are long over do for a reality reset and unfortunately this is the ONLY way it will happen.
