Minor update added at 14:55 UTC on September 22:
Region 11302 (formerly S1226) produced a major long duration X1.4/2N event peaking at 11:01 UTC. An impressive full halo CME was observed in both STEREO-A and B. The CME was extremely wide and became full halo even in LASCO images. A flank impact from this CME is possible on September 25. As more of the region has rotated into view it appears to have the largest area of any sunspot group so far in cycle 24

This solar flare brought to you by the Number 7.

Now, stay tuned for Doom.. er, uh, I mean "Zoom".

Thanks. What's up with SOHO? I think its like a turtle, every time it gets scary it hides its head for six hours. Sometimes the gaps are filled in, sometimes not.

SOHO graphs also have long gaps. I think maybe they download the missing data once or twice a day when the satellite's orbit is best for downlink.

Re: SOLAR WATCH * Huge X8.2 Flare Sept. 10, 2017! (Updated Daily)
Wow this is probably the biggest CME I've seen since I've been keeping track of this stuff. Just look at the simulation:
[link to iswa.gsfc.nasa.gov:8080]

Who knows how big the flare really was since it was on the limb? I wonder why they don't haves a satellite that measures flares on the backside of the sun?
Things could get very interesting as this sunspot turns toward earth.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1414904

This is a CME that was launched prior to the most recent. It was a backside flare off the Western Limb. The CME from Region 1302 has yet to be added to this simulation. We do have telescopes and satellites that can see and measure these flares, that is how this simulation was produced.
 Quoting: tomasgod1

Oh I thought they added the x flare cme to the simulation. What I meant was why don't they have x ray sensors on one of the satellites to measure the intensity of backside flares?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1414904

I see what you meant, and I meant to say "we do have telescopes and satellites that can see and measure these CMEs". GOES is the satellite that measures the X ray flux, and it measures it from Earth's orbit. The strength of the flare is measured by how the sensor is affected at Earth's orbit from that distance. I guess NASA ddn't budget that it was important eneough to worry about flares that they do not anticipate will affect us. I would be interested to know though, and I am sure that the more data that can be gatherd the better understanding scientists would have. As far as the CMEs are concerned we have the Stereo satellites, SDO,and SOHO to study them. The Stereo satellites are constantly...slowly but surely...progressing to different regions around the Sun. By this time next year Stereo A and B will both be much more near the far side of the Sun from the Earth, and by June 2015 Stereo A will be directly opposite the Earth in direct alignment with the Earth and Sun; Stereo B will be very close to Stereo A.

Hey guys check this out and tell me if you know whats going on, i'm at a loss for whats going on here...

[link to www.n3kl.org]

It seems the magnetosphere has been compressed enough to start to allow variable magnetic fields exposed to the low earth orbit satellites, the last time this happened we had that Kp=8 storm. But the magnetic fields were exposed to -175 nT.

[link to www2.nict.go.jp]

simulation shows nothing, I don't know where this is coming from.
