Anonymous Coward User ID: 1679900 United States 09/25/2011 11:03 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Well I was getting fairly concerned about the probabilities for a "Carrington" type event within the next few days...27th thru the 29th, then I talked myself down thinking..."we will probably be fine...maybe a large CME could cause some disruptions during that period...but we will surely be fine! If we are already seeing power grid "trips" without these flares being directed at Earth, and we have no CME hitting right now, what will happpen over the next few days as we get bombarded by direct hits from flares and CMEs? I do not have a good feeling..at all! Small consolation - its a new moon on the 27th - and coincidentally, there's one on October 28th. I'm more worried about a Carrington event around Oct 28th, for the simple reason you pointed out earlier - that Earth is directly between the Sun and Jupiter around that time. What did the Boeing guy say? What did the Boeing guy say last year? |

I am picturing all you solar watchers poised at the ready,... to be the first to spot/post new sun activity. Kinda like in the old westerns where at high noon,... zacksavage User ID: 1969194 United States 09/25/2011 11:21 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | No,...you should not get rid of it based upon any comment by me. I was j/k. The thing is,...we are all here watching and waiting for something to happen. Perhaps the sun will feel performance pressure and go limp today. Anonymous Coward User ID: 1540313 United States 09/25/2011 11:25 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Does anyone have any idea what the record is for M class and/or X class flares in one day? Quoting: Slade No idea- I wouldn't know where to look either.Sunspot 1302 sure is hot- very prolonged spikes w/ the last few flares. I really hope a huge one (like Carrington's) doesn't fry our electronics. That would ruin the whole decade! |

zacksavage User ID: 1969194 United States 09/25/2011 11:33 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hi finley,...Nice to see you. It was damn hot here in NM yesterday. I tried to look at the sun but it was such a bright white that I could not. These flares, CME's, and such are so fascinating,.. and to think it is only in the last few years that we as average citizens can truly see what a super-charged, active power-house the glowing little ball in the sky really is. Breath-taking really, and mind-expanding. Z Free your mind,...your ass will follow. --- parliament funkadelic |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1297814 Germany 09/25/2011 11:38 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Does anyone have any idea what the record is for M class and/or X class flares in one day? Quoting: Slade here u have a list of the most Powerful Solar Flares Ever Recorded: [link to www.spaceweather.com] On September 1 – 2, 1859, the largest recorded geomagnetic storm occurred. From August 28 until September 2, 1859, numerous sunspots and solar flares were observed on the Sun, the largest flare occurring on September 1. This is referred to as the 1859 solar superstorm or the Carrington Event. It can be assumed that a massive Coronal mass ejection (CME), associated with the flare, was launched from the Sun and reached the Earth within eighteen hours — a trip that normally takes three to four days. The horizontal intensity of geomagnetic field was reduced by 1600 nT as recorded by the Colaba observatory near Bombay, India. It is estimated that Dst would have been approximately -1750 nT.[7] Telegraph wires in both the United States and Europe experienced induced emf, in some cases even shocking telegraph operators and causing fires. Aurorae were seen as far south as Hawaii, Mexico, Cuba, and Italy — phenomena that are usually only seen near the poles. Ice cores show evidence that events of similar intensity recur at an average rate of approximately once per 500 years. Since 1859, less severe storms have occurred in 1921 and 1960, when widespread radio disruption was reported.[8] [link to en.wikipedia.org] |
