then place this into visuals:

The reason why if you cut a magnet into pieces each becomes it's own magnet with North ans South poles is because the really don't have north and south poles, that is just the direction the field is flowing in the material. If you cut it in pieces the electrons are still aligned in the same direction so nothing has changed. Poles are simply labels for our convenience, to indicate direction flow. By cutting it you are not suddenly going to cause the electrons to align any differently then they already were.
 Quoting: observation

 Quoting: aether

aether,...this makes me think of the torus and its opposing polls radiating from a singularity.
Also,...the cut pieces of the magnet take on a fractal, holographic imagery where when it is broken into parts,....it is a ghost reflection of the whole.

Dammit!!! You are going to force me to check out the complex math thread you got going huh??

chuckle

Sunspot #1302 has been rather quiet-only two M-flares since 9/25's hyper-activity. Here's images from yesterday's M4.0.
[link to www.lmsal.com]

[link to sdowww.lmsal.com]

Earth's magnetosphere took a good pounding in yesterday's level 8 storm. Pretty awesome for a "glancing blow". Active Region 11302 is now more directly facing the Earth; if any big flares or Coronal mass ejections come from there in the next few days, they will be geo-effective for sure.

Here's a sampling of NICT simulation from yesterday's magnetic storm.

Right now-

Sunspot 1302:
Chance of a M flare = 60%
Chance of a X Flare = 63%

[link to spaceweather.inf.brad.ac.uk]

Region 11302 [N14E23] relaxed further as the magnetic delta structure in the central penumbra decayed. The leading penumbra stretched out and could soon merge with the central penumbra. If that happens we could again see a situation with frequent and strong flaring

Stereo Ahead C2 shows two CMEs between 19:39 UTC Mar. 11, and 4:24 UTC Mar. 12.

There was an Earth facing CME that shows up beginning at 19:39:24 UTC 2011/03/11, and another (very large) CME on the far side of the Sun starting at 4:24:24 UTC 2011/03/12.

Good job Ninz are you sure it's 63 M flares and not maybe 62 or 64? Only pulling your leg, you might not know who I am as I think i'm given a new user i.d each time I (rarely) post in here, but I have helped you out a few times in the past putting you right on wrongs.

Great geomagnetic storm tonight and potential for more storming tomorrow night when a slower, fainter cme arrives.

Let me help all the Newbies with questions like, "is this unusual?" or "Should I be worried?".
You can all remain calm and know that nothing too crazy, strange, never, seen before, or scary is happening UNTIL you see one of our knowledgeable Sun-watchers begin to post those types of statements. Until then please try to remain calm, we are going to be seeing A LOT of different things(SOLAR Wise) over the next few days as these sunspots come around.
No need to panic until THEY do :P

Love to you all and keep on learning!
 Quoting: Mushydoll

ok mushydoll, I really know what i'm talking about so i'll test you (and anyone else who cares to respond) with a question...

Why is the density at 0 protons/cm3.

Look, I know that there is nobody who visit's glp that will be able to answer my question, so I will answer it... And please please please, all you supposed ''glp solar boffins'' stand up and take note.

The density reads 0 because the sensors on the ace spacecraft are (let's just say) past their sell by date.

During a cme passage or a ch wind stream the density rises to a level higher than 5 and lower than 100. The crappy density sensors on ace get quickly overwhelmed, and return incorrect readings. Wind density is NEVER zero, on a quiet day at solar minimum the typical wind density is between 2 and 5 protons cm/3.

The only way to get a more accurate reading of density is to use soho's wind density data, it only updates every 3 or 4 hours though, unlike ace which is real time data.

Please take note 'boffins'

yup, so true. we have talked some on this thread about how outdated the sensors are
some of us do watch the SOHO data, especially when having a CME arrival
